Health Occupations and Nursing is a vital academic division at Shoreline Community College. The Health Occupations and Nursing division offers degrees and certifications in Nursing, Health Information Technology, Dental Hygiene, Medical Lab Technology, and NAC. The Dental Hygiene program trains students to become Dental Hygienists and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Under the supervision of the co-Directors of Dental Hygiene, the successful candidate will be responsible for teaching dental hygiene theory, laboratory, and clinic. Lead instructor responsibilities will be assigned in the following subject areas: first-year and second-year restorative theory, labs, and clinics. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will advise students, assist with assessment of current instructional methods, develop programs and curricula, and participate in Shoreline Community College governance, department, division and campus-related professional activities. This position will be in the UW School of Dentistry campus 1959 NE Pacific St., Seattle, WA 98195.

Qualifications

Required Education & Experience


  • Current Washington State License to practice Dental Hygiene or Dentistry OR ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Master's degree in Dental Hygiene or a Master’s degree in a related discipline with a Bachelor’s in Dental Hygiene from an accredited institution.
  • Three (3) years of recent dental hygiene clinical experience
  • Experience teaching in a higher education environment

Knowledge of
  • Microsoft Office programs, learning management systems, and other appropriate instructional technology
  • Electronic health record keeping
  • Information and privacy regulations (HIPAA, FERPA, etc.)

Skill in
  • Teaching using various modalities such as online, hybrid and in-person
  • Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into the instruction of Dental Hygiene
  • Fostering a climate of equity and belonging through multicultural awareness, competence, and responsiveness
  • Effective oral/written communication with individuals at all levels inside and outside the College
  • Adapting to a variety of teaching situations with students from diverse backgrounds/abilities
  • Developing/modifying curriculum both collaboratively and independently
  • Working and interacting effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

 

Conditions of Employment

Physical Work Environment
The College is currently in mixed (both in-person and online) operations, with the option for some assignments to completed in an online environment based on program or area needs. If authorized by the College for remote (online) instruction, faculty will need to provide their own workspace and internet access, noting the College will provide technical equipment and support for online work needs. For on-campus in-person instruction, work is usually performed in a classroom or clinical setting that requires standing and/or sitting for extended periods of time. Faculty typically use computers, media equipment, and clinical equipment in the work environment. This position will be located in the UW School of Dentistry 1959 NE Pacific St., Seattle, WA 98195.

Term of Employment/Salary
This is a full-time, tenure track position, with a 172-day annual contract beginning September 19, 2024. Salary placement is determined by the number of qualifying years of teaching/work experience combined with educational preparation. Hiring of this position is contingent upon available funding as determined by the College President.
