Founded in 1916, Sacramento City College (SCC) is a multi-campus, urban college that consists of a 70-acre main campus across from William Land Park. The college has two educational centers, one in Davis on the campus of the University of California, Davis, and one in West Sacramento located adjacent to the public library, community center and civic center. Position Summary

The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in their regular teaching field and clinical practice; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties in a hybrid teaching environment; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assisting with both dental programs accreditation and any applicable program approval processes; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member. Under the direction of the Dean of Education and Health Professions, this position serves as the Presiding Dentist for both the Dental Assistant and Dental Hygiene programs per the standards and regulations of the Dental Hygiene Board of California and Commission on Dental Accreditation.

The college Presiding Dentist is a faculty member assigned to the dental assistant and dental hygiene programs or other related specialty dental areas, as applicable. The Education and Health Professions division and the dental programs maintain a focus on:
  • Commitment to and experience in the dentistry profession and teaching a diverse population of students.
  • The ability to create and sustain supportive learning environments that promote student success.
  • Experience with program development, ongoing assessment, and effective use of technology in instruction.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster partnerships with dental health care providers and related organizations, community organizations, and educational institutions, including high schools and universities.
  • Professional experience in areas related to dentistry that includes dental assisting and dental hygiene program administration and one year of full-time academic teaching responsibilities.

Position Salary Information:
Initial maximum salary placement is based on academic degree, upper/graduate level units earned, and/or related professional occupational experience per the Los Rios College Federation of Teachers Contract (the initial maximum placement is Class V, Step 8). Salary

$72,360 to $95,796 per year. Additional earnings may be available for summer, overload, and stipends. LRCCD Salary Schedules

Additional Salary Information

Initial annual salary within a given range varies, depending upon units/degrees completed at accredited institutions and experience. Candidates not holding the minimum degree requirement may start at a salary lower than posted above.

Assignment Responsibilities

The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in all levels of dental hygiene, dental assisting. In addition, the dentist will provide clinical supervision for patient care at the SCC Dental Clinic when treatment is being provided by students. This may include:
  • Managing with the assistance of the clinical instructor and/or program coordinators any medical history or dental emergency related to the care of patients, students and faculty.
  • Consulting with student, clinical instructors, and the program coordinators regarding any medical history, medication, and vital sign questions or concerns.
  • Referring patients for medical/dental consultations, as necessary.
  • Consulting with students, clinical faculty, and the patient on extra-oral and intra-oral findings which deviate from normal.
  • Providing appropriate dental screenings for clinic patients.
  • Authorizing radiographs, providing prescription, and supplying appropriate number of films.
  • Evaluating, interpreting, and discussing radiographs with the students, clinical instructors, and sharing findings with the patient when appropriate.
  • Evaluating radiographs based on program criteria.
  • Evaluating and selecting appropriate patients for sealant application.
  • Referring all patients for comprehensive dental examination or immediate referral in case of emergency.
  • Providing treatment and assisting with minor dental procedures as necessary such as:
    • Placement of temporary filling material
    • Re-cementation of a crown etc.
    • Adjustment of sealant material
    • Tends to soft tissue injuries
  • Observing and evaluating NO2O and local anesthesia administration by students.
  • Evaluating nitrous oxide/oxygen tank system with clinical/instructional assistants and documents logs.

The presiding dentist will also offer expertise and guidance in current practices and procedures relating to the assessment and operation of the dental clinic facilities; provide input into budget preparation and fiscal administration in collaboration with the dental program faculty coordinators/director. Other duties and teaching assignments will be determined by the Dean of Education and Health Professions.

Meet educational requirements as specified by the Dental Hygiene Board of California.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Have a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from an accredited institution completed by August 17, 2024.
  2. Possess current Dental License in the State of California.
  3. Possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) cards.
  4. Meet educational requirements as specified by the American Dental Association (ADA) Commission on Dental Accreditation and other regional or national accrediting agencies.
  5. Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
