Job Description

 

Position Summary

This position serves as the administrative head of the Campus Police Department.  Responsibilities include managing the daily functions of the department, supervising the campus police officers, and evaluating and reacting to situations involving the safety and security of the College community.  The Chief of Police is directly responsible to the Executive Director of Financial Services.
 
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience according to ACCS Board of Trustees Salary Schedule C3.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Supervise and manage the functions and personnel of the Campus Police Department, including developing//enforcing departmental procedures, methods, and policies.
  2. Develop plans, procedures, and budget for campus security, emergency response, and other related matters for the college.
  3. Serve as the college's president’s key advisor on all issues related to campus safety and security.
  4. Coordinate appropriate training for departmental personnel to ensure currency in field and meet or exceed standards established by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
  5. Oversee all criminal investigations to include evidentiary retention and disposition in compliance with state law.
  6. Coordinate the submission of all criminal reports to the Alabama Criminal Justice Information System as required by state law.
  7. Coordinate the presentation of annual Emergency Operation Plan training for all employees.  Coordinate new student and new employee Emergency Operation Plan training.
  8. Coordinate training drills and exercises for the college related to safety and security, to include evacuation and lock down drills in every building during every twenty-four-month cycle.
  9. Direct the planning, organization and execution of all emergency management activities to ensure that its activities are coordinated with county, state, and national programs.
  10. Maintain and update hazard mitigation, emergency response and recovery plans for all campuses.
  11. Patrol campus throughout the day and evening for visibility, which prevents unruly and illegal activity.
  12. Ensure compliance with the Clergy Act and related federal laws and regulations, include publishing and distributing and Annual Security Report, maintaining a Daily Crime Log, and completing required annual reports.
  13. Coordinate with others on the Behavioral Intervention Team and conduct threat assessments on all student and employee disciplinary actions and person identified as potential threats.
  14. Serve as liaison to the college community, the System Office, and outside agencies involving matters of safety and security.
  15. Coordinate or provide training as requested by the campus community related to domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, drug abuse prevention and alcohol abuse prevention.
  16. Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity, both on and off the campus.
  17. Participate in staff, division, and committee meetings as assigned.
  18. Actively participate in division/college committees and campus activities.
  19. Perform other duties as required by the President or Executive Director of Financial Services.

 

Qualifications 

  1. A minimum of high school diploma or GED certificate required.
  2. Valid Alabama Driver’s License required.
  3. Alabama Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Certification (APOST) required.
  4. A minimum of ten (10) years’ employment experience as a police officer required.
  5. A minimum of three (3) years’ administrative supervisory level experience in law enforcement required.
  6. Must be insurable by the College’s insurance carrier.
