The faculty, staff, and stakeholders of Virginia Highlands Community College (VHCC) enjoy the privilege of serving the individuals of the commonwealth who reside in Washington County, western Smyth County, and the city of Bristol, VA. One of 23 institutions in the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), VHCC is a beacon for educational opportunities in view of Mt. Rogers and Whitetop Mountain at Exit 14 on Interstate 81 in Abingdon, VA. With a robust 55-year heritage, VHCC serves students in the service region through a Workforce Development Division, a Professional and Technical Studies Division, an Arts and Sciences Division, and a Health Programs Division. VHCC awards credentials and continuing education courses as well as Associate of Applied Science degrees, Associate of Arts and Sciences degrees, certificates, and career studies certificates.
Instrumental to the overall culture of the college and the surrounding community is a long-standing tradition that places great value on teaching. At the college’s founding, visionary leaders at VHCC established institutional and academic priorities that have kept the college positioned to serve students who are passionate about preparing to become teachers. In addition to serving students who earn an associate degree before transferring to purse education-related bachelor’s degrees, VHCC is fortunate to have multiple early childhood education programs that consistently produce graduates ready to enter the field.

In light of these distinctive qualities, VHCC is seeking a full-time faculty member who will teach education courses in addition to representing the interests of the college and the students as the Education-Teacher Preparation and Early Childhood Education program coordinator in our service region. Intentionally, VHCC seeks to employee a full-time faculty member who will bring a diverse set of experiences and perspective to this service for students. This colleague will teach education courses as necessary in response to enrollment demands to include a combination of seated and virtual delivery methods each semester. Additionally, the remaining workload credit hours will be dedicated to supporting program coordination initiatives and conducting various liaison activities in the best interest of maintaining, promoting, and expanding the endeavors of the college in regional education partnerships. Position Responsibilities:
  • Teach day, evening, seated, hybrid, and virtual classes;
  • Actively promote program and course development;
  • Actively employ effective student success strategies;
  • Integrate instructional technology in courses and the curriculum as appropriate;
  • Manage program coordination efforts;
  • Actively recruit teacher preparation students;
  • Develop new courses as necessary;
  • Establish and assess student outcomes and participate in Institutional Effectiveness initiatives to include assessment and program reviews;
  • Maintain ten Student Engagement Hours per week with accessibility to students;
  • Advise students on curriculum and career goals;
  • Provide leadership and service on college committees;
  • Pursue professional growth and development activities in discipline(s);
  • Advance the college mission by involvement in college, community and professional activities that enhances the college and impact student development;
  • Teach other courses matching qualifications and perform other duties as assigned by supervisor;
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty & staff and other stakeholders important to the college.
 
 
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in education or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution OR a master’s degree and 18 graduate credit hours in education;
  • Willingness to develop and teach education coursework using emerging and alternative delivery methods;
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication in the English language;
  • Demonstrated understanding of and belief in the comprehensive mission of community college;
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders important to the college;
  • Experience teaching in a K-12 setting.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate degree in education or related field;
  • Experience leading and coordinating an education/teacher preparation program;
  • Experience teaching in a community college setting;
  • Demonstrated success in program planning and assessment;
  • Credentials to teach in a second program area if needed.
