The City University of New York (CUNY) is the nation's largest urban public university. The Graduate Center is the focal point for graduate research at CUNY. The Advanced Science Research Center (ASRC), a new 200,000 square-foot state of the art research facility in upper Manhattan, was purposely built to elevate interdisciplinary STEM research and education across CUNY. The ASRC hosts five research initiatives: structural biology, nanoscience, photonics, neuroscience, and environmental science. In addition to the twenty tenure-line faculty members doing research in their laboratories, research efforts are supported by 15 core facilities run by dedicated, expert research professors and that attract over 1,000 users from nearby academic, non-profit, and industrial institutions. After nine years, the ASRC is now widely regarded as a unique and leading interdisciplinary research center through the breadth of its research activities, its high-end core facilities, and the deliberate cross-fertilization of research, providing unique opportunities to cultivate and support interdisciplinary research and graduate training. 

The Structural Biology Initiative (http://structbio.asrc.cuny.edu), operates over two floors in the ASRC building, and houses state-of-the-art facilities, including equipment and expertise in biomolecular NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and electron microscopy. Eight tenure-track and research faculty members along with the 25 members of their labs contribute to a vibrant, interactive, and supportive community that push the frontiers of their fields via their own work and their collaborations. 

The Structural Biology Initiative also proudly contributes to the international-level resources and activities of the surrounding intellectual community in this field, particularly via interactions with colleagues and facilities in the neighboring City College of New York (CCNY) and New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC). 

The Structural Biology Initiative of the Advanced Science Research Center at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York is seeking a full-time tenure-track faculty member to join in Fall 2024. 

The successful candidate will engage in research, teaching, and mentorship of students and other laboratory members; make key contributions to shape the ASRC's cross-disciplinary Structural Biology Program; and initiate new interdisciplinary collaborative projects and activities across CUNY and other research institutions in New York City. Teaching of undergraduate students at the neighboring City College of New York (CCNY) and graduate students at the CUNY Graduate Center are also integral to this position. Finally, the successful candidate will contribute to the continued acquisition of external funding from private and public funding bodies; devise innovative mechanisms to engage the general public, the next generation, and potential donors in structural biology and life sciences; and ensure compliance with federal research guidelines and University policies.

This position requires the incumbent to work on-site.

Qualifications:

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent.  Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution. 

A preferred candidate should have:

• Ph.D. degree in Biophysics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Cell Biology or closely related discipline. Postdoctoral experience is strongly preferred, but not mandatory in exceptional cases.
• Demonstrated ability to successfully teach and mentor undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers.
• Demonstrated research accomplishments and leadership in structural biology, as broadly defined by the use of biophysical and chemical tools to obtain structural insights into the mechanisms of biological molecules and assemblies. Such accomplishments should be clear from an excellent track record in publishing in high-impact, peer-reviewed publications, and an innovative and ambitious research plan which complements the research of the ASRC Structural Biology Initiative (https://asrc.gc.cuny.edu/structbio ) and the ASRC Faculty more broadly (https://asrc.gc.cuny.edu/about/people/faculty-facility-directors/ ).
• Demonstrated ability to forge collaborative relationships with peers and to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders at various organizational levels.

Compensation:

$95,000 - $120,000. Commensurate with qualifications, experience and education (subject to University approvals).
