About the Department
 

From its inception in 1992, the Center for Clinical Cancer Genetics & Global has supported translational research services, including (1) a patient registry and database and (2) a serum/tissue bank. Patients presenting in the Cancer Risk Clinic were uniformly encouraged to enroll in research. We developed and implemented a variety of educational and training initiatives, ranging from community-based programs for patients and families, to workshops and conferences for clinicians and scientists, to postdoctoral fellowship program in clinical cancer genetics.


Job Summary
 

The Genetic Counselor Assistant will work collaboratively with dedicated Genetic Counselors in the Center to ensure provider and patient satisfaction and streamlined clinical operations in collaboration with schedulers in the clinic and Clinical Research Coordinators across the University of Chicago Health System.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Clinic Schedulers and MAs in UChicago Medicine Clinics to triage referrals for patients with Inherited Cancer Syndromes.

  • Interact with patients referred for cancer genetics counseling to obtain medical information and family histories by sending out family history questionnaire, and following up by phone to construct a 3-generation pedigree as needed.

  • Support enrollment of High-Risk patients and clinical programming across the UChicago Health Network including Ingalls and Orland Park clinics.

  • Consult with Nurse Navigator and APP across the cancer network to coordinate general patient care and ensure patients have appropriate follow up.

  • Perform duties involving direct patient care as assigned by our Interdisciplinary and Interprofessional team within scope of clinical programming and UCM policies and procedures.

  • Ensure patient clinical research charts/intake are prepped for clinic and reviewed by a GC prior to appointments.

  • Maintain patient-tracking databases and collaborate with Clinical Research Coordinators and Data Managers.

  • Obtain and document relevant patient information and update in EPIC EMR and request outside records if applicable.

  • Document all aspects of patient care/ interactions.

  • Under instruction, guidance and direction from others, works as a member of a health care team, providing genetics counseling, screening services, community outreach programs, consultative services, and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited conditions.

  • Reviews implications with the patient and provides crisis intervention regarding unexpected genetic conditions. Serves as a patient advocate and refers individuals and families to community or state support services. Serves as an educator and resource for other health care professionals and for the general public.

  • Performs other related work as needed.


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Preferred Qualifications


Education:

  • Bachelors degree.

Experience:

  • Knowledge and experience in biology.

  • EPIC knowledge.

  • Computerized appointment scheduling experience.

Preferred Competencies

  • Considerable skill in communicating verbally, in determining priorities and in organizing work; ability to maintain an organized, alphabetized filing system.

  • Strong computer skills: Excel, Microsoft Word for Windows.

  • Ability to handle stress in a fast-paced environment.

  • Considerable skill in handling sensitive public contacts with discretion, tact and courtesy when dealing with patients, coworkers, and physicians.
