Position Objective

The Chief Program Officer is responsible for setting the strategic vision and guiding philosophy that informs short- and long-term goals of Surge programming and drives new programming, and for leading the Program function and ensuring high-fidelity implementation and experience for the portfolio of Surge programs. The person in this role will also be a key leader and critical thought partner on the senior leadership team, which will include the Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Advancement Officer, and Chief of Staff.

Essential Functions

  • Set the organizational programming strategy, vision, and guiding philosophy to ensure programming achieves the mission of elevating and amplifying the leadership of education leaders of color across the country.
  • Develop and lead new programming strategy including collaborating with the Chief Advancement Officer and Chief Operating Officer to support pilot programs and new service offerings to ensure quality program design, effective service delivery, cost-effectiveness, and overall value and satisfaction with clients and partners.
  • Lead the Program function including providing leadership and oversight of the strategic planning process for all programming including defining priorities and program needs, developing the strategic plan, and overseeing programming design, delivery, evaluation, documentation, and measurement.
  • Serve as a Surge brand ambassador; championing and showcasing Surge's programs and impact externally.
  • Build and strengthen external relationships and partnerships and cultivate new partnerships to promote external resources and internal program development in support of the organization's mission.
  • Define policies, procedures, and systems for programmatic design, delivery, evaluation, documentation, measurement, and accessibility.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement. Determine success metrics and organize evaluation effort to understand program effectiveness and fidelity to Surge ethos, and use outcomes to continuously improve; coach program staff as needed.
  • Research and stay abreast of national landscape issues and developments that impact Surge curriculum and incorporate them into Surge programming.
  • Lead a high-performing, diverse, and inclusive team: recruit, hire, develop, and retain exceptional, diverse, and equity-minded talent; practice inclusive team management practices that result in high levels of engagement and belonging; align on vision, priorities, and role expectations with all team members and ensure a high degree of alignment between organizational goals, team goals, and individual role goals; work with Chief Operating Officer to administer discipline up to and including termination.
  • Develop and maintain the annual programming budget including review and analysis of monthly budget-to-actual reports.
  • Report to work on a regular basis and is available for occasional after-hours emergency calls and projects.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in nonprofit, adult learning and development, and/or education with progressive levels of responsibility
  • Minimum 3 years of development experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience leading a team.
  • Experience leading a complex portfolio of programs or programming across multiple sites preferred.
  • Proven ability to think strategically to advance the overall goals of the organization.
  • Fervent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • A high degree of professionalism and the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Executive presence and ability to build authentic relationships with funders and organizational partners.
  • Highly effective and skilled communicator both in writing and orally.
  • Highly skilled collaborator that works exceptionally well with internal and external stakeholders and partners – especially across lines of difference (race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, socioeconomic background, LGBTIA+ status, etc.).
  • Exceptional ability to problem-solve, be resourceful, flexible, and creative.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • A growth mindset – belief that continuous improvement is dependent upon continuous learning and radical candor.

  • A dedicated remote work area that is quiet enough for the employee to concentrate is required. Must have homeowner's or renter's insurance and the ability to comply with company technology, safety, and health requirements.
  • Ability to travel to program sites monthly, bi-monthly during the onboarding period. Quarterly travel as required to attend board meetings, leadership meetings, and other events.
  • Ability to frequently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery.
  • Ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • May require more than forty (40) hours per week to perform the essential duties of the position.

Compensation

  • The salary for this role is $170k - $178k with a 10% performance bonus potential.
  • The Surge benefit package includes fully remote roles, flexible scheduling, professional development stipend, 401k with employer match, and unlimited Paid Time Off. Surge covers 80% of medical benefits cost for the employee, 75% for dental and vision, as well as short term and long term disability benefits at no cost to the employee.
