About the Department

The successful applicant will join the Curriculum and Instructional Design (CID) team at the NC State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM). This team guides planning and implementation of a top tier veterinary educational program alongside veterinary educators from the curriculum level down to individual lesson plans. We serve as educational expert consultants to educators and content planners. This includes support for assessment blueprinting and design, teaching strategy selection, learning outcome development, and problem solving around complex teaching scenarios. We also facilitate the overall strategic mission of the curriculum through content mapping, course evaluation, and training for educator onboarding and advanced skills.

Essential Job Duties

The Instructional Designer works primarily with our Pre-Clinical (Years 1~3) curriculum. This means collaborating with course planners and instructors to develop, review, and revise teaching and assessment strategies for a variety of contexts (lecture, lab, problem-based cooperative learning, and hands-on skills practice with live animals). They will be a consulting member on the five Thread Teams that guide Pre-Clinical courses and act as a link between them and the curricular map of content. They will contribute to building portfolios for reporting each Thread’s progress and evolution. The Instructional Designer also has a lead role in educator training content development and provision.

As a CID team member, the Instructional Designer will join four others in a collaborative and supportive workspace. While each member has different primary roles, overlap is frequent and shared problem solving strongly encouraged. The team keeps semi-flexible work schedules with more emphasis placed on meeting deadlines than fixed hours, excepting that we must maintain a minimum office presence for catching issues as they arise. Monday check-ins are used to stay up on everyone’s projects and identify needs.

Each team member is further expected to devote 10% of their working time to self-guided learning or development projects of their choice that explore areas of knowledge not already fully represented at the CVM. This can be a deep dive into educational theories we don’t yet apply, following a curiosity beyond the bounds of veterinary education, or other topics. Members bring learnings from “Their 10%” back to the team for adoption and adaptation.
