As part of the Land Grant University, the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University is composed of over 40 faculty that direct a diverse portfolio of programs in teaching, research, and extension. Collectively, these strengths not only serve our clientele and our science but also provide a rich environment for graduate education and training that can be tailored to the specific career interests of the student, irrespective of whether they prefer training in the basic sciences or are preparing for a career in extension. Our education and research programs provide graduate and undergraduate students with unique hands-on learning opportunities using the latest technologies. Entomology and Plant Pathology houses the Plant Disease and Insect Clinic, the Larry Grand Mycological Herbarium, Micropropagation and Repository Unit, Structural Pest Management Training Facility, an Insect Museum with over 2 million vouchered insects, and the Center for Integrated Fungal Research.
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences houses 12 Academic departments with 294 faculty, 2820 undergraduate students (including 250 in the 2-year Agricultural Institute program) and 990 graduate students. The College is home to 18 research stations strategically located across the state that enhances our interactions with our farmers, stakeholders, and industry partners. Essential Job Duties
The Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Nematology. This is a 9-month tenure-track assistant professor position. The anticipated effort would be 65% Research and 35% Teaching. This position will report to the Department Head of Entomology and Plant Pathology.
- Research Program Development:
- Develop an internationally recognized program focusing on:
- Molecular, cellular, and organismal biology of plant-pathogenic nematodes.
- Host-parasite interactions.
- Implement contemporary genomic, biotechnological, and systems biology approaches.
- Competitive for extramural funding.
- Advance the sciences of nematology, plant pathology, and biology.
- Develop an internationally recognized program focusing on:
- Educational Background and Teaching Responsibilities:
- Documented education and experience to teach nematology and related disciplines.
- Teach at undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Develop and teach nematology sections of graduate classes.
- Participate in teaching an undergraduate general education class in parasitology (for non-Majors).
- Train M.S. and Ph.D. students.
- Instruct guest lectures in classes upon request.
- Preference for North Carolina Relevant Research:
- While no agricultural commodity focus is required, preference for developing plant-nematode systems relevant to important plant-parasitic nematode species in North Carolina.

Minimum Education and Experience
- PhD in plant pathology, nematology or related discipline.
Other Required Qualifications
- Excellence in undergraduate or graduate teaching with a background to teach plant nematology at graduate level.
- Demonstrable skills in verbal and written communication, interpersonal relations, and procurement of extramural funding.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interests in, and experience with nematology.
- Expertise in molecular, cellular, and organismal biology of plant-pathogenic nematodes and their host-parasite interactions, implementing contemporary genomic, biotechnological, and systems biology approaches is desirable.
- Track record of securing extramural funding required to run and maintain a nationally and internationally recognized program.
- Demonstrated professional growth and contributions to university mission.
