Crop and Soil Sciences

About the Department

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research, extension, and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

Essential Job Duties

The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor with specific expertise in Soil Microbial Ecology with an emphasis on molecular approaches. The position is critical to both departmental teaching and research missions; the formal appointment is research (70%) and teaching (30%).

This position will develop a multi-faceted research program focused on microbial community composition, metabolic capability, and interspecies interactions that apply “–omics-based” experimental approaches, including metabolomics, metagenomics, proteomics, and transcriptomics, in soil environments, including in urban, agricultural, or contaminated settings. Due to the complexity of soils, specialized approaches and knowledge are needed to approach the bioinformatic and technological issues associated with the application of these techniques to the soil ecosystem and environment. The position would have a primary focus on understanding the mechanisms of microbially-mediated transformations and fluxes of soil carbon in the context of climate change but would also be expected to contribute to the department’s and university’s mission through studies on nutrient and contaminant cycling in soil.

Teaching duties associated with the position include an undergraduate soil microbiology class and a new graduate class that will focus on ecology and manipulation of beneficial soil microbial communities, as well as the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.
