Full job description

Post Doctoral Associate (Karikari)

Med-Psychiatry - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (24002921)

The Biofluid Biomarker Laboratory, directed by Dr. Thomas Karikari in the School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh, invites applications for postdoctoral associates to begin June 2024 (negotiable). The initial appointment is for one year, from June 1st, 2024, through May 31st, 2025, with a second-year renewal possible upon the successful completion of an annual performance review.

The Biofluid Biomarker Laboratory is dedicated to advancing biomarker research for neurodegenerative diseases. In conjunction with the Pittsburgh Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), we are particularly interested in developing blood-based biomarkers for cost-effective, non-invasive diagnosis and prognosis of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders. The lab features a wide range of cutting-edge equipment designed for ultra-sensitive immunoassays and mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis. The successful candidate will learn to utilize these technologies to measure fluid biomarkers in clinical cohorts to characterize various disease risk modulators. The incumbent will also have the opportunity to develop and implement innovative bioanalytical methods to detect pathological changes in the brain that correlate with neurodegenerative diseases. Research responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, analyzing and interpreting experimental results, presenting research findings at internal and external meetings or workshops, writing manuscripts and reports, and assisting in the training of students and staff.

Minimum requirements include a Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, pathology, or a related biomedical field, the ability to carry out experiments and conduct data analysis, and the capability to perform scholarly work such as research presentations and publications. Preferred qualifications include prior experience/exposure in neurodegenerative disease research, documented records of productive and high-quality research by peer-reviewed publications, and strong writing and communicative skills.
