Full job description

Overview:
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is an independent, nonprofit organization providing adult cancer treatment and groundbreaking research focused on cancer and infectious diseases. Based in Seattle, Fred Hutch is the only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center in Washington.

With a track record of global leadership in bone marrow transplantation, HIV/AIDS prevention, immunotherapy and COVID-19 vaccines, Fred Hutch has earned a reputation as one of the world’s leading cancer, infectious disease and biomedical research centers. Fred Hutch operates eight clinical care sites that provide medical oncology, infusion, radiation, proton therapy and related services, and network affiliations with hospitals in five states. Together, our fully integrated research and clinical care teams seek to discover new cures to the world’s deadliest diseases and make life beyond cancer a reality.

At Fred Hutch we value collaboration, compassion, determination, excellence, innovation, integrity and respect. These values are grounded in and expressed through the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion. Our mission is directly tied to the humanity, dignity and inherent value of each employee, patient, community member and supporter. Our commitment to learning across our differences and similarities make us stronger. We seek employees who bring different and innovative ways of seeing the world and solving problems. Fred Hutch is in pursuit of becoming an anti-racist organization. We are committed to ensuring that all candidates hired share our commitment to diversity, anti-racism and inclusion.

The Newell Lab was originally established in 2012 at the Singapore Immunology Network, Singapore and then moved to the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in August 2018 (publication list: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/myncbi/evan.newell.1/bibliography/public/ Website: https://research.fredhutch.org/newell/en/projects.html). A major goal of lab is to exploit T cell antigen-specificity to gain clinically relevant insights about human immunity in the context of cancer and infectious disease. This is achieved through leveraging expertise in the use of highly-multiplexed peptide-MHC tetramer staining in conjunction with mass cytometry or single-cell sequencing to deeply profile human antigen-specific T cells. In addition, novel experimental and computational approaches are being developed that allow for improved examination of T cell phenotypes, function, antigen specificity, as well as T cell receptor repertoire. Although the lab focuses mostly on studying the roles of T cells in human health and disease, we also participate in many projects related to other cell types and mouse tumor systems are also employed.

Our lab is seeking an outstanding and open-minded Postdoctoral Fellow to work on developing and implementing cutting-edge analysis to investigate the roles of T cells in various models of cancer and infectious disease.

Responsibilities:
  • Learn nuances of implementation of mass cytometry and single-cell sequencing based approaches for the analysis of cellular samples
  • Engage in experimental design, planning and coordination with collaborators
  • Initiate and carry out scientific projects, under the supervision of Evan Newell
  • Develop new ideas for projects or approaches based on immunological interest and knowledge of the literature
  • Conduct and publish research in appropriate journals.
Qualifications:
  • A doctoral degree in immunology, biochemistry, life sciences or related fields
  • Experience with flow cytometry and/or single cell sequencing (mass cytometry experience not required)
  • An interest in T cell immunology
  • Computer programming or bioinformatics skills would be very advantageous but not required
  • Experience with protein expression and purification would also be advantageous
  • An ability to learn new techniques and troubleshoot assays
  • Good team player, independent, self-driven with good interpersonal skills
statement describing your commitment and contributions toward greater diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in your career or that will be made through your work at Fred Hutch is requested of all finalists.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $67,728 to $100,000 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
