Basic Function:
Applications are invited for the position of Postdoctoral Scholar working with Drs. Elena Novak and Lisa Borgerding for Kent State University’s NSF-funded project entitled, “Physical Science Robotics Interdisciplinary Design (PRIDe) in Computer Science Education: Broadening Participation in STEM through Cascading Peer-Mentorship.”

Additional Basic Function – if applicable:
The four-year interdisciplinary project partners with Cleveland Metropolitan School District to conduct design-based research investigating how the PRIDe curriculum with and without cascading peer-mentorship impacts elementary, middle, and high school students’ robotics and physical science learning and their attitudes toward computer science and science. The intervention includes physical science and robotics teacher professional development, the PRIDe curriculum including physical science and robotics design challenges, and a cascading peer-mentorship model including KSU computer science majors, high school computer science students, and middle and elementary science and computer science students.

Examples of Duties:
Primary responsibilities will include attending regular team meetings; assisting with the development, implementation, coordination, and evaluation of the PRIDe curriculum in a large urban school district; preparing and delivering teacher professional development about the PRIDe curriculum; assisting with design-based research data collection and analysis; and developing and disseminating research findings through conference presentations, manuscripts, and technical reports.

Additional Examples of Duties – if applicable:
The candidate will become a researcher in the School of Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum Studies at Kent State University at the Kent, Ohio campus. The candidate will join a team including the project’s four principal investigators, two project doctoral graduate assistants, several computer science undergraduate students, and teachers and students in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. As part of their job duties, the candidate will participate in a variety of professional development activities including mentorship from the four project PI’s on all project activities to include developing, conducting, presenting, and publishing research findings; preparing and delivering K-12 teacher professional development; working in partnership with a large urban school district for curriculum implementation and evaluation; and networking with other KSU and broader community researchers. In addition, the PIs will work collaboratively to help the postdoctoral researcher create their Individual Career Plan to establish relevant goals in their professional and academic development and monitor the progress made towards the goals annually.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in science education, computer science education, educational technology, learning sciences, STEM education, or a closely related field, and

Strong research background in K-12 computer science and/or science/STEM education
Experience in teacher education/professional development and K-12 computer science and/or science/STEM education in the United States
Strong research skills, preferably qualitative skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Ability to efficiently multi-task and meet deadlines

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Light work-Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.

Additional Information:
