Summary

The Department of Learning Health Sciences (DLHS) at the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, seeks a full-time, tenure-track faculty member at the Assistant/Associate or Full Professor level with rank and salary commensurate with education and experience.  We seek an innovative scholar with a special interest and expertise in health applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML). The ideal candidate will have interest and experience that combines the development, validation, implementation, and evaluation of AI/ML applications designed to improve health and health care. A doctoral-level degree (MD, Ph.D., or equivalent) is required. We welcome applications from clinicians who wish to continue providing health care as part of their professorial activities. DLHS is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

We seek candidates who will view AI/ML from a socio-technical perspective, understanding that a model's development, implementation, and governance is a necessary but insufficient first step toward the beneficial use and adoption of these methods. Applications from candidates whose work has focused on a particular disease or disease domain are welcome. Still, the successful candidate must be interested in supporting students and collaborating with colleagues in various problem domains. Because most of DLHS funded research is conducted in active collaboration with other departments and the health care delivery system, the successful candidate must be comfortable leading interdisciplinary team projects.

Especially desired are candidates with experience in the development and application of AI/ML methods, including but not limited to the following areas:

?       Development of models using a wide range of analytical and validation techniques

?       Methods to ensure that AI/ML applications are sensitive to ethical considerations and health equity

?       Educating end-users, including care providers and recipients, to make best use of AI/ML methods and applications

?       Evaluation of AI/ML implementation that addresses effects on health behavior and outcomes

?       Implementation of AI/ML models in health care settings, including reporting and communications for model transparency

Responsibilities*

?       Develop and conduct an externally funded research program aligned with the Department?s health and healthcare improvement mission and with the individual?s scholarly interest.

?       Foster scholarly initiatives with other faculty members to improve AI/ML applications.

?       Collaborate with personnel in the healthcare delivery system to promote the implementation of AI/ML applications.

?       Participate as a faculty member teaching in the Health Infrastructures & Learning Systems (HILS) MS/PhD and HILS online programs.

?       Advise postdoctoral, doctoral, and graduate students and trainees on AI/ML methods

A start-up package is available to help the successful candidate establish a sustainable research program. Joint appointments with other departments across the University will be available and encouraged. Applicants with appropriate background and experience may later be considered for leadership positions related to AI/ML within the University of Michigan Health System and its affiliates.

Required Qualifications*

Applicants must have:

?       A terminal degree (PhD, MD, or equivalent) in a relevant discipline

?       Formal computer science, information science, data science or informatics training at the master?s degree level or demonstrated equivalence.

?       A clear research focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning.

?       A record of excellent scholarly achievement, extramural funding or potential for funding appropriate to the applicant?s seniority and professional experience

?       Demonstrated potential for successfully teaching learners from various backgrounds

?       Demonstrated contributions to academia through service to professional societies, journals/conferences, and academic diversity, equity, and inclusion, as appropriate to the applicant?s position or rank
