The Montgomery College, Adult ESOL & Literacy-GED Special Programs, is currently accepting applications for possible openings as a part-time faculty member teaching Citizenship Preparation. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated teacher who exhibits a high degree of professionalism, a strong commitment to our students, and demonstrates the ability to motivate and educate in an engaging manner.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Montgomery College is seeking an adjunct instructor for its Citizenship Preparation for Adult ESOL Learners course. The instructor will be responsible for teaching a 40 or 60 hour

course. This course will enroll adult students with high beginning or intermediate ESOL level and go over the skills needed to pass the Citizenship Interview, English & Civics Test. The instructor will:

  • Follow Citizenship Preparation curriculum for adult ESOL learners.
  • Create instructional activities that allow learners to practice their English skills, interview skills and Civics knowledge in a contextualized and meaningful way.
  • Scaffold and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a multi-level ESOL class.
  • Assess students’ successful completion of the course.
  • Abide by all college policies and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Education or related field or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience that demonstrates the ability to effectively perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Experience teaching English language learners for a minimum of one year.
  • Working knowledge of basic US History and Government and the ability to explain these concepts to English language learners.
  • Experience working with a diverse adult student population.
  • Proven experience in delivery of high-quality instruction, including creating scaffolded, differentiated, and contextualized instructional activities.
  • Successful candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and multicultural competence in an educational and work environment and must be willing to contribute to the Colleges strategic plan of inclusion.
  • Faculty members are expected to have access to a personal computer with virus protection that can connect to the internet outside of the work location (i.e., office, classroom, college campus)*. Montgomery College (MC) provides an MC e-mail account and access to the learning platform, password-protected faculty sections of the website, college listservs, and other faculty communications tools. *If you do not have access to a personal computer, please notify the department chair at the time of interview. Subject to available funds, the college may be able to provide temporary access to resources.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without a sponsor.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in TESOL or related field.
  • Coursework in TESOL.
  • Completion of a TESOL certificate program.
  • Teaching experience in Adult ESOL.
  • Teaching experience in Citizenship Preparation.

  • Successful completion of a background check and degree verification (if applicable).

  • For international degrees, you must provide US degree equivalency verified by a nationally recognized credential evaluation service.
