Description

The Vice President of Instruction is the senior academic officer of the college and is responsible for providing overall vision, leadership, management, planning, and execution for the instructional functions of the college. The VP of Instruction reports to the college president and is a member of the executive management team known as the President’s Cabinet.

This key position serves as a collaborative action-oriented partner with other college leaders and their respective departments, champions and centers students, and serves as an advocate and partner for instructional leadership, faculty, and staff. The VPI plays a leadership role in developing and ensuring execution of a vision that advances equity, inclusion, and student access, excellence in teaching and learning, and student success across all academic departments.

This is a twelve (12) month per year, full-time administrative exempt position. The salary placement is dependent on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. Grays Harbor College has an excellent benefits package to include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, primary and supplemental retirement programs and long-term disability insurance. Full-time employees will also receive 15.34 hours of vacation leave per month, 8 hours of sick leave per month and 4 personal leave days a year. Washington state also observes 11 paid holidays per year.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

  • Administrative oversight of all academic programs including: transfer, professional technical, applied baccalaureate, pre-college, continuing and community education offerings, Tribal Pathways, and a variety of student support functions, including the library, eLearning, and tutoring.
  • Preparation and management oversight of instructional budgets, including grants.
  • Strategic oversight of academic scheduling; faculty selection, evaluation, and tenure processes; development and implementation of academic planning tools.
  • Supervises instructional staff, deans, and other members of the instructional staff.
  • Serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet.
  • Collaboratively implement measures to increase equitable student success with Student Services. In coordination with the faculty, develop a strategic academic plan for the College.
  • Drive change to forecast and shape the academic profile to meet student and industry needs.
  • Oversee the alignment and execution of relevant and timely non-credit and workforce training.
  • Serve as liaison with state and federal entities, accrediting associations, public and private schools, other higher education institutions, community agencies, and business and industry concerning instructional matters.
  • Represent the College in the local community, as well as across the state and region.
  • Lead, inspire and ensure faculty commitment to equitable learning opportunities and outcomes.
  • Ensure staff and faculty represent the diverse student population through equity-centered and data-informed approaches.
  • Serve as a key college leader in Guided Pathways.
  • Guide the work of the Curriculum Committee and Instructional Planning Team to systematically review policies, programs, outcomes, and course offerings.
  • Provide appropriate training and support for adjunct, probationary, and tenured faculty. Foster open, inclusive, and candid communication among administration, faculty, staff, and students on matters related to Instruction.
  • Provide leadership for instructional efforts associated with accountability, outcomes assessment, and accreditation. Serve as chair or member of designated College committees, councils, and teams.
  • Provide leadership in accordance with the Mission and Vision established by the College, furthering values, tenets, and priorities of the College. Ensure areas of responsibility operate effectively within the policies and procedures of the College and applicable governing agencies.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for operating unit(s). Train, supervise, and evaluate employees in accordance with negotiated agreements, applicable state and federal laws, and College policies and procedures.
  • Exercise effective stewardship over college resources. Prepare reports and analytical materials to illustrate objectives, activities, and accomplishments of areas of responsibility.
  • Create a safe, bias-free working environment, which engenders respect for differences. Work to achieve a diverse and thriving college community.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:


  • A master’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Significant teaching experience (five or more years).
  • Community college experience is desirable, especially with rural and branch campuses.
  • A proven record of increasingly responsible administrative and/or leadership experience, including successful supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in enrollment management—quarterly and annually.
  • Experience in budget management and planning, especially with limited resources.
  • Experience that demonstrates the ability to promote diversity and enhance equity.
  • Demonstrated ability to act collaboratively—with colleagues, faculty, and community partners.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a variety of contexts; strong listening skills, ability to think analytically, use data to inform decisions, and follow-through.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A progressive leader with the ability to nurture innovation in instruction in a respectful manner.
  • Experience with regional accreditation, as well as program accreditation.
  • Experience with a wide range of instructional programs: academic transfer, workforce education, adult basic education, corrections education, contract training, continuing education, etc.
  • Experience with dual-credit programs (such as Running Start, College in the High School, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, or others).
  • Successful experience with grant applications; securing of funds and contracts; and management.
  • Understanding and skilled in educational technology as it pertains to higher education.
  • Bilingual, especially Spanish and English.
