The Assistant Director of the TRIO McNair Scholars program leads the design, implementation, evaluation and evolution of academic services for the McNair program while providing holistic and culturally-fluent advising, coaching, and advocacy for McNair participants.

About the TRIO McNair Scholars Program
The TRIO McNair Scholars program inspires and empowers the McNair student community to succeed in research, graduate study, and advanced careers. The McNair student community includes undergraduate students from The College of St. Scholastica, the University of Minnesota Duluth, Lake Superior College, and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College. To be eligible for the McNair program, students must be income-eligible first-generation students or students from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in graduate study.

Monday - Friday; 8-4:30; other hours as needed

 

Key Results/Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff partners to design, implement, evaluate and evolve an integrated student learning experience for McNair participants through engaging and effective methods – both in-person and virtual.
    • Design, coordinate and facilitate McNair seminars and other educational activities focused on preparing students for research, scholarly activities and graduate school in collaboration with faculty and staff partners. This includes serving as Course Co-Director for the two-credit Research Foundations course.
    • Design and facilitate student travel to academic conferences and graduate school visits.
    • Utilize formative and summative assessment to continually evolve the student learning experience for McNair participants.

     

 
  • Provide holistic and culturally-fluent advising, coaching, and advocacy for McNair participants that supports their success in coursework, research, scholarly activities, and graduate school.
    • Assess academic needs, create a student success plan, and monitor academic progress.
    • Provide academic counseling, assistance with the graduate school application process, and assistance with the financial aid process for graduate school.
    • Ensure a sense of belonging and a strengths-based mindset for each participant.
 
  • Design, implement, evaluate and evolve an academic support system for McNair participants in collaboration with faculty and staff partners.
    • Communicate and coordinate with faculty and staff partners to monitor academic progress for McNair participants.
    • Build and maintain partnerships with the tutoring center, counseling center, and other resources to ensure seamless referrals and support for McNair participants.
 
  • Assist McNair Director with administrative operations and assume administrative responsibilities in the Director’s absence in order to provide ongoing leadership.
    • Support assessment, evaluation, reporting, and program development.
    • Provide input on budget development.
    • Support development of faculty and staff partnerships at CSS and partner institutions.
 
  • Support an institutional culture of equity, diversity and inclusion supportive of TRIO McNair Scholars participants.
    • Amplify student voice and advocate for resolution of issues impacting McNair participants.
    • Serve on relevant CSS committees/initiatives to support the success of McNair participants.
    • Continue to learn and develop knowledge and skills related to equity, diversity and inclusion.
 

 

Required Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Education and Experience
    • Bachelor’s degree and professional experience in an academic support or academic research program.
    • OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills
  • Understand the fundamentals of research, scholarly activities, and graduate school processes.
  • Understand the socioeconomic and cultural aspects of served populations.
  • Design and facilitate engaging and effective student learning experiences including in-person and virtual pedagogy.
  • Provide developmentally-appropriate and strengths-based student advising and coaching.
  • Establish effective, culturally-fluent working relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:
  • Mobility to work in a typical office setting and use standard office equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person or over the telephone; strength to lift and carry up to 20 pounds; ability to occasionally work on nights and weekends; ability to travel to multi-day graduate school visits and academic conferences 2-3 times per year.
  • Desired work flexibilities provided to the extent that they are reasonable and possible per job responsibilities. On-campus presence is required.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional or lived experiences that build awareness and empathy for the lived experiences of students in the served population.
  • Previous experience with TRIO or other educational opportunity programs.
  • Master’s degree.
