Position description

The Department of Computational Media at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a postdoctoral scholar, under the direction of Dr. Norman Su. The postdoctoral scholar will be part of the Authentic User Experience (AUX) Lab at the UCSC Silicon Valley Campus.

In collaboration with Dr. Su and his collaborators, the postdoctoral scholar will contribute to one or both of the following projects, along with other projects they may be interested in exploring: (1) an NSF-funded project on rural computing and human-computer interaction to evaluate and develop data-driven technologies with rural communities and (2) a project to examine the pragmatics of social justice in the context of tech and the Silicon Valley. The postdoctoral scholar will also be encouraged to seek out new and exciting forms of disseminating and communicating research to a diverse readership.

The successful candidate will help manage the AUX lab and collaborate on research with Dr. Su including fieldwork, system design/development/evaluation, and peer-reviewed publications. The postdoctoral scholar is expected to publish work in peer-reviewed HCI or related discipline conferences or journals. The candidate will gain experience working with doctoral students and grant writing.

Applicants with knowledge and interest in organization studies, rural computing, or designing for marginalized communities and expertise in qualitative (e.g., ethnographic methods of inquiry, grounded theory, discourse analysis), quantitative (e.g., natural language processing), humanistic methods in HCI/CSCW, computational social science, and/or prototyping are encouraged to apply. Applicants with industry experience, or experience collaborating with industry, are also strongly encouraged to apply. Additionally, the position can be an opportunity to learn new methodologies or approaches. We encourage applicants from backgrounds traditionally marginalized or underrepresented in the field.

Please note that the postdoctoral scholar is expected to be based in the Silicon Valley Campus, located in Santa Clara, California. However, the postdoc will have opportunities to collaborate and interact with the main UCSC campus.
