|Bloomsburg University Police Officers are community oriented. Our officers are highly interactive with the student population as many students are away from home for the first time and seek guidance and direction from our officers. The role is one of assistance and enforcement, and the officers are viewed as problem solvers. We look for leadership potential and excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to present information and relate to our student population. The shift is comprised of vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols with significant interaction with the residential population. Our police officers provide a police presence that promotes the safety and security of all members of the university community. This is an essential personnel position.|
|EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:|
Description of Duties:
-Work involves patrolling (by foot and vehicle) grounds and buildings to ensure safety and enforce University, Commonwealth and Federal regulations.
-Directing and controlling traffic and parking. Investigating suspected crimes and accidents.
-Cooperating with local, state and other police authorities.
-Monitor, respond and reset fire and security alarms.
-Monitor and operate security camera systems.
-Respond to calls for service and assistance.
-Practice safe measures to prevent crimes, accidents and injuries.
-Testifying in court or legal proceedings.
-Assume dispatching duties as needed.
-Transports sick and injured persons.
-Transport university funds or valuables to proper locations.
-Participate in training and education courses as assigned, some of which may require out of town overnight lodging.
-Displays and removes campus event and temporary directional signage.
-Accurately and clearly complete hand written and computer generated reporting documents, to include but not limited to, police reports, traffic and parking violation citations and injury reports.

|QUALIFYING EXPERIENCE / EDUCATION:|
Minimum Experience and Training:
One year of police experience or any equivalent experience or training. Law enforcement experience in a college setting is preferred.
Necessary Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle operator’s license. Ability to meet such qualifications regarding strength, agility and health as may be required. Current CPR, Infant CPR and First Aid certifications are required prior to offer of employment.
Act 120 Certificate of completion is required. Documentation must be provided at the time of application.
Applicant must possess these skills, knowledge, and abilities or to be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.
-Knowledge of Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Crimes Code and Vehicle Code.
-Effective oral communication skills.
-Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time. Ability to multi-task.
-Ability to work long hours under varying climatic conditions.
-Ability to work shifts, including nights, holidays and weekends; work on an on-call basis; work irregular duty assignments.
-Ability to wear a uniform and safety equipment.
-Ability to deal firmly but tactfully with parents, students, employees and the general public.
-Ability to conform to department grooming standards.
-Ability to attend educational sessions as required; travel out of town for one or more consecutive days.
-Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions appropriate to responsibilities assigned as a law enforcement officer.
-Knowledge and training of group behavior and crowd control.
-Skill in the safe use and care of firearms and other issued equipment.
-Ability to remain alert and react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper courses of action.
-Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
-Ability to work with little direct supervision.
-Ability to adhere to General Orders, Operating Procedures and other policies and guidelines.
Applicants will be rated on the following criteria:
1) Knowledge and experience in community oriented policing.
2) Investigative experience.
3) Specialized police experience/training such as crowd control, sexual assault investigation, crime prevention, and instructor development.
4) Experience and training to the needs of others/diverse cultures.
5) Experience in report writing and other professional documentation.
6) Experience with public interaction.
