The Director of Multicultural Student Affairs reports to the Executive Director for Student Life and Assessment Initiatives, and is responsible for providing leadership in the development, coordination and implementation of co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, education, training and support services for Asian American/Pacific Islander, Native American/American Indian, Black/African American, Multiethnic/Biracial, and Hispanic/LatinX, students. The Director directly supervises the department of Multicultural Student Affairs staff, and collaborates with academic and administrative units throughout the University on diversity initiatives designed to enhancing the retention and graduation rates for above named student populations.


Summary of Role

  • Provide oversight and strategic leadership to the department of Multicultural Student Affairs to ensure that the office is providing programming, resources, and services that are responsive to the changing needs of our underrepresented and marginalized students.

  • Provide supervision, direction and mentorship to staff including (1) Assistant Director, (1) Accounting/Administrative Assistant, (1) graduate assistants, graduate practicum student(s), 10+ student employees and volunteer student staff members.

  • Responsible for the fiscal management of budgets totaling over $380,000 which includes operating expenses, book loans, student organizations, and scholarship accounts.

  • Provide support and advocacy services, education, training, and social and educational programming.

  • Builds and fosters key relationships with colleagues across the campus. Serve as a resource to the University of Miami community on policy development and initiatives relating to issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, multiculturalism and related themes.

  • Serve on various advisory boards and University committees such as Africana Studies Advisory Board, Campus Climate Committee, Woodson Williams Marshall Association, and Enrollment Management.

  • Develop, implement and manage the outcome assessment and documentation of innovative programs, services and activities, which support and promote the mission of Multicultural Student Affairs.

  • Participate in fundraising initiatives, grant research and preparing proposals to support departmental programs and objectives.

  • Collaborate with faculty, academic units and administrative offices throughout the University to implement and coordinate programming and initiatives which enhance the recruitment, retention, matriculation, and graduation of students designated as under-represented at the University of Miami.

  • Develop programs and initiatives designed to promote academic success and co-curricular achievement.

  • Provide visibility on issues affecting multicultural students and serve as an internal expert the evolving needs.

Planning & Program Development

  • Develop and create educational, support and identity-based programs and services. Provide leadership in the development of new programmatic initiatives.

  • Develop and implement social justice presentations and training curricula to increase community-wide understanding of underrepresented and marginalized student populations.

  • Collaborate with campus departments to create and execute a calendar of programs and activities that focus on diversity and inclusion topics and overall student development.

  • Manage, coordinate and advise various departmental and student organization program initiatives which promote diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout the University community.

  • Design, implement, and coordinate initiatives and programs focusing on student success and retention for students of color. Such programs include: Horizons Orientation program, Men and Women of Color initiatives, Students of Color Symposium, and Life Skills Leadership Program.

  • Coordinate departmental programming to include: Senior Mwambo ceremony, workshops during Orientation, cultural competency and identity initiatives, leadership development retreats, Black Student Welcome Reception.

  • Coordinate programs and services associated with the month-long celebrations.

  • Advise cultural student organizations including Asian/Pacific Islander Awareness Month, Black Awareness Month Committee, Black Student Leadership Caucus, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, Hispanic Heritage Month, Native American Month, and Filipino Heritage Month.

  • Coordinate department social media presence, as well as the production and distribution of the Unity Newsletter, Horizon Orientation publications and departmental brochures.


  • Connect students with appropriate resources on and off campus.

  • Develop and facilitate support and discussion groups.

  • Serve as primary advisor to or coordinate the advising of 25+ student organizations - United Black Students (UBS), Alliance of LatinX and Indigenous Students, Brothers Overcoming Negativity (BOND), Black Awareness Month Committee (BAM), Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration, MSA Crew, Hui Aloha, Organization for Jamaican Unity, and Unity Roundtable Consortium.

  • Maintain records, correspondence and develop a positive mentor relationship with students. Provide guidance, fiscal oversight of student organization budgets, and assist in coordinating diverse programming initiatives.

  • Provide one-on-one advising, support and counsel to students of color experiencing academic and/or personal difficulties. Assist students in becoming more connected to university resources.


  • Make daily independent decisions to ensure department objectives are met and that University policies and procedures are followed.

  • Contribute ideas and viewpoints on operational and strategic plans for the department and campus programs/events.

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise professional and administrative staff, including an Administrative Assistant, Graduate Assistant, and student staff. Facilitate employee training, development, and annual evaluations.

  • Maintain relationship with Black Alumni Society, the alumni affinity group, and the UM Alumni Association.

  • Develop and provide oversight for the strategic plan, departmental reports, and SACS reports.

  • Develop and conduct on-going assessment of programs centered on stated learning and programmatic outcomes through the utilization of evaluation instruments, focus groups and tracking.

  • Work with colleagues to review University policies, procedures, and materials to promote a campus that is safe and welcoming for multicultural students, staff and faculty.

  • Oversee the publications and marketing materials including newsletters, social media and brochures, etc.

  • Ensures effective and efficient workflow and adherence to quality standards for programs/events, staff, and self.

  • Serve on University committees.

  • Perform additional duties as delegated by supervisory staff.


  • Provide oversight and signatory authority (financial management and budget) for Multicultural Student Affairs with an annual budget exceeding $380,000. Monitor fiscal resources to ensure departments operate within defined budget parameters.

  • Review all accounting and paperwork associated with Multicultural Student Affairs finances and budget management.

  • Generate outside funding for programs from federal, state, and local grants, as well as private sources.


  • Excellent English skills, verbal and written, required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, required.

  • Demonstrated project management, time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage details of multiple projects within firm schedules.


* Master's degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration


  • Minimum 5-7 years’ work related experience in higher education or related field.

  • Experience working with underrepresented student populations and in cultivating programming and initiative to serve the University community.

  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and diversity education.

  • Experience working with college students in a programmatic and advisory capacity.

  • Experience facilitating trainings, meetings and seminars around diversity and inclusion.

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships on a college campus.

  • Experience with developing and implementing goals, learning outcomes and assessment program
