|Founded in 1955, American River College is one of the largest institutions of higher education in the Sacramento region, serving about 30,000 students each fall and spring at its main campus and centers. |General Responsibilities: |
The faculty member shall be responsible for the following: teaching assigned classes under the supervision of the area dean; helping students fulfill their maximum potential in mastering course content; assessing student learning outcomes; maintaining a thorough and up-to-date knowledge in his/her regular teaching field; continuing professional development; utilizing current technology in the performance of job duties; maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position; assisting with articulation and curriculum development and review; serving on college committees and participating in faculty governance including accreditation and student co-curricular activities; assuming other responsibilities as assigned by the area dean; fulfilling other duties and responsibilities of a full-time faculty member as outlined in the college faculty handbook.
|Additional Position Summary:|
|The instructional assignment may include, but is not limited to, teaching courses in: |
● News writing and reporting
● Mass media and society, and other topics in the field of journalism
● Producing the college newspaper
The position uses diverse journalism media, including print, photo, video, audio, internet, and other multi-media methods and techniques.
Teaching assignment may include day, evening, on-line, hybrid, weekend, and/or off campus classes.
|Additional duties may include, but are not limited to, providing leadership in the following areas: |
● Serving as lead instructor for the Journalism Program at American River College.
● Acting as advisor to the American River College school newspaper.
● Developing curriculum.
● Coordinating and maintaining student and community interactions with the Journalism Program at American River College and related organizations such as advisory boards, vocational training, and funding agencies, and professional service groups.
● Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry standards and developing plans for providing appropriate training and equipment for educational use.
|The Humanities department and curriculum maintains a focus on: |
● Multi-media methods and techniques as related to teaching journalism courses.
● Current trends in journalism.
● Cohort-based teaching.
● Interdisciplinary teaching approaches.
● Colleague Collaboration (department and college).
|1. Have a master's degree from an accredited institution completed by January 12, 2017, in Journalism or Communication with a specialization in Journalism; OR, a bachelor's in either of the above AND a master's in English, History, Communication, Literature, Composition, Comparative Literature, any Social Science, Business, Business Administration, Marketing, Graphics, or Photography; OR, hold a California Community College Instructor's Credential in the discipline area; OR, the equivalent. |
2. Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles.

|Entering annual salary within a given range varies, depending upon units and degrees completed at accredited colleges/universities and on verified experience. Additional earnings may be available for summer, overloads, and stipends. Candidates not holding a master's degree may start at a salary lower then posted above. |
