Maria Darley has been named director of Study Abroad at Augusta State University, effective August 1. Darley has served as the coordinator of the study abroad program since 2008.
“As faculty continue to develop study abroad courses, it’s good to have someone with Maria’s experience to ensure that everything runs smoothly. I’m sure she will continue to do an excellent job in this expanded role,” says Carol Rychly, acting vice president for academic affairs.
As the director, Darley will oversee the logistics and administration of all study abroad and study away programs. She will assist faculty members with the travel aspects of their international programs as well as coordinate and present the orientation programs for 15 study abroad trips. She also will serve as the university’s representative on statewide committees, System Council on International Education, and the European Council.
“I am really excited about this opportunity to work more closely with the faculty,” said Darley. “Due to the collaborative effort of the faculty and the study abroad office, ASU experienced a 50 percent increase in student participation in study abroad programs from 2010 to 2011,” she added.
Prior to Darley joining the Office of Study Abroad, she served in the Career Center and as an instructor in the Department of Learning Support at ASU. She also has served at other universities including as assistant dean of students at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and in student service roles at Savannah College of Art and Design and Florida State University.
