Position description

Search for the Vice Chancellor for Student Academic Affairs and Graduate Dean

University of California, San Francisco

San Francisco, CA

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), one of the world’s premier health sciences institutions, seeks a dynamic, creative, and experienced leader to serve as the next Vice Chancellor for Student Academic Affairs and Graduate Dean (VC-SAA/GD). This is a unique position, as the VC-SAA/GD will be a major force in the support and training of health professions students as well as PhD-level graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. The VC-SAA/GD will provide vision and inspiring, collaborative leadership in overseeing the administrative, health and wellness, and financial resources to support all enrolled students in UCSF’s five health professions programs and in the Graduate Division and will support UCSF’s rich training environment for students engaged at the cutting edge of the scientific enterprise.

UCSF is one of the world’s leading centers of biomedical research, patient care, and health professions education, as well as graduate and postdoctoral training. It is known for a culture of collaboration where faculty and staff work together to advance patient care, lead innovative curricula in the health professions and translate new discoveries into treatments that have, on multiple occasions, changed the practice of medicine. As the only University of California campus dedicated solely to the health sciences, UCSF also has developed a strong reputation for excellence in teaching and integrated clinical practice. UCSF is first among public institutions nationwide in research support from the NIH, garnering a total of $636.1 million in 2020. All of its four professional schools—the School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and School of Pharmacy—ranked in the top three in NIH funding in their respective fields. Additionally, the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Pharmacy, and departments within the Graduate Division consistently rank among the top ten nationally by U.S. News & World Report and other national and international ranking organizations.

The VC-SAA/GD will play a key role in the continued growth and development of excellence, equity, and inclusion in graduate education and student academic support at UCSF, serving the needs of an increasingly diverse and global learner population. The Graduate Division of UCSF is one of the premier graduate biomedical and social science schools in the U.S., offering an array of graduate degrees in the biological, biomedical, pharmaceutical, nursing, and the social and behavioral sciences. UCSF also serves a remarkably talented student body of health professional students, masters and doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars. The Student Academic Affairs division offers a wide range of vital services including academic, personal and professional development resources to enhance learning and success.

Reporting to the Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Dr. Daniel Lowenstein, and working in collaboration with the professional school Deans, the VC-SAA/GD has the opportunity for profound societal impact, educating and advancing the next generation of leaders advancing healthcare discovery and innovations in education and clinical care. A PhD is required, with other advanced degrees in the health professions optional. The successful candidate will also address the following opportunities and challenges:

  • Craft a comprehensive vision ensuring inclusive excellence in graduate and postgraduate education and academic support;

  • Advance evidence-based practices and policies to recruit, retain, and support a diverse student body and postdoctoral scholars;

  • Model effective collaboration with the professional schools and Health System to advance innovation, excellence, and support the learner experience;

  • Champion learner success, health and wellbeing, especially that of minoritized or underrepresented groups;

  • Augment funding for the benefit of UCSF students and postdoctoral scholars;

  • Continue to provide strong unit cohesion and inspiring leadership.
