Criminal Background Check Pre-employment criminal background checks are required for all Staff and Faculty positions. Pre-employment urinalyses drug screens are also required for all top candidates considered for positions in ACC's College Police department.

General Statement of Job


The Simulation Specialist will provide technical and mechanical support for the HLC Regional Simulation Center. This includes professional-level installation, maintenance, and support of network computer systems, associated simulation technology, audio/visual systems; and assistance for faculty and staff in an academic lab environment.


Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  1. Provides technical support, training, and assistance to students, faculty, and staff in a computer lab environment; analyzes problems and implements solutions according to department guidelines and procedures; performs network and server administrator duties, and assures system stability, accessibility, and proper configuration of assigned technical systems and components; assists with development of in-house testing support applications and websites using industry standard languages (PHP, VB, SQL) and techniques while coordinating with other relevant systems administrators and software vendors on custom programming.

  2. Works with simulation equipment and high fidelity mannequins which involves unique software testing, evaluation of new technologies, assessing compatibility with other equipment and software, and then integrating options with existing equipment and software.

  3. Creates connections to test Electronic Health Records (EHR) to promote student success when going to hospital to use real life EHR systems.

  4. Performs computer troubleshooting to diagnose system problems; analyzes hardware and software functionality; identifies, locates, resolves, and repairs problems within scope of authority; documents call records and results.

  5. Monitors domain environment; resolves configuration and connectivity issues, and other traffic, security, and access problems; checks network for operating efficiency, makes corrective adjustments to data management settings, and assures system integrity; sets up and repairs network hardware.

  6. Maintains departmental website.

  7. Maintains and updates workstations and servers, equipment, and peripherals; researches and tests new software; installs software upgrades and enhancements; uses imaging software to create and deploy desktop computers.

  8. Enrolls students, faculty, and staff in tutorial applications and domain services as required; monitors utilization trends and backup procedures; manages user accounts, password files, and access rights.

  9. Responds to the needs and inquiries of students, faculty, and staff; explains IT issues, deploys solutions, and follows up with users to assure the stability and functionality of the users' systems.

  10. Monitors physical security of assigned department assets; controls access to premises, observes user activities, and facility utilization shifts; provides materials, training, and assistance as needed.

  11. Reports technical problems which need to be addressed by improved policies or procedures.

  12. Provides technical support to students and instructors to assist in the training of students, faculty, and staff on software applications usage. Facilitates one-on-one instruction and group workshops.

  13. Collects, compiles, analyzes, and presents reports for technical and administrative information; may include facility usage and resource utilization.


Additional Job Specific Duties



    • Maintains current knowledge of simulation/lab equipment catalogs and operation manuals.

    • Analyzes system hardware, software, simulator, and audio/visual problems and implements solutions according to department guidelines and procedures


    1. Maintains and updates workstations, servers, mobile devices, simulation equipment, and peripherals; researches and tests new software; installs software upgrades and enhancements; uses imaging software to create and deploy desktop computers.

    2. Troubleshoots equipment malfunctions and contacts vendors as needed.

    3. Provides technical support for task trainers and multimedia peripherals including: beds/examination tables, headwalls, patient monitors, and other health care equipment.

    4. Provides recommendations on equipment, supplies and materials.

    5. Programs simulator software to model simulator's physiological response to instructor specifications.

    6. Operates patient simulators and cameras for the duration of simulations.

    7. Operates and maintains audio-visual and debriefing systems.

    8. Sets up and takes down simulation laboratory equipment which may involve rapid turnover of simulation lab set up.

    9. Provides theatrical production (costuming and moulage) for simulation scenarios as requested.

    10. Performs other job-related duties as required.

  •  Operation of standard audio-visual equipment.

  •  Use a variety of spreadsheet, word processing, database, and presentation software.

  •  Use network domains.


Required Work Experience


  • Two years related work experience.


Required Education


  • High school diploma or educational equivalent.


Preferred Education


  •  Associate Degree in related field such as computer technology or  Associate Degree in healthcare field: RN, Paramedic,  Respiratory Therapist, etc.

Licenses/Certifications; Other


  •  Current licensure/certification in area of expertise as applicable. 


Other Preferred Qualifications


  •  Knowledge of programming languages or knowledge of assistive hardware and software technologies.

  •  Knowledge of simulation education principles and processes in a clinical setting.

    Knowledge of a variety simulation manikins, associated simulation devices, and audio/visual systems.

    Knowledge of medical terminology and human anatomy/physiology.

  •  Certification as Healthcare Simulation Operations Sepcialist


Physical Requirements


  •  Work is performed in a cinical simulation lab setting.

  •  Subject to standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling, and at times subject to stooping, crawling, and climbing.

  •  May need to lift heavy objects of up to 50 pounds.

  •  Specific vision abilities may include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to focus.

Full-time Faculty and Staffing Table employees who work in full-time and/or part-time positions at the College are eligible for ACC medical benefits effective the first of the month after their first 60 days of employment. Benefits include medical, dental, life insurance, short and long term disability, retirement plans and AD&D.

ACC does not participate in Social Security. ACC participates in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) and the Optional Retirement Program (ORP-Faculty Only). Part-time and Hourly employees participate in the ACC Money Purchase Plan (ACCMPP) as a retirement program required by Federal law.
