The Dean, under general direction, acts as the Chief Executive Officer of the College and is responsible for supervising and directing the teaching, research and service missions of the College and the University. Makes decisions or recommendations regarding budget, curricula, degree offerings, faculty and student recruiting, faculty development/tenure and promotion, fundraising, long range strategic planning, matters of academic quality, promotion of College interests, research planning and student mentoring for the College.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises college planning, constructs college budget, seeks requisite funds from University's state budget, and allocates funds among the departments and research units of the college.
Oversees faculty recruitment and development including working with department heads on matters dealing with salary administration, promotion, and tenure.
Coordinates searches for, and recommends appointments of, department heads and research directors.
Promotes teaching and research excellence among faculty and submits recommendations for outstanding achievement awards when appropriate.
Oversees the teaching, research and administrative functions within the college and delegates responsibility to appropriate staff members.
Participates with the College Development Officer in outside fund-raising activities.
Supervises assigned staff.
Interacts with the Provost concerning state academic issues and corresponding budgets.
Education - Earned advanced degree: PhD or equivalent. Must have the background and credentials to rank as a Full Professor at the University.
Experience - Academic administrative experience at the level of department head, research director, associate dean, equivalent or higher. Demonstrated evidence of the scholarship of teaching and learning, excellence in classroom instruction, research, and scholarly work appropriate to qualify the candidate for appointment as a tenured full professor in one of the departments at Texas A&M University-Kingsville.
Knowledge of - Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications. Demonstrated knowledge of academic administration.
Ability to - Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated capacity for leadership.
