Job Description:

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University at Albany, State University of New York, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in the area of computational mathematics for Data Science / Machine Learning, to start in Fall 2023. The department has great strength in all major areas of mathematics. It is also unique in that it has an established MS program in data science with an enrollment of 90 students and is granting doctoral degrees in data science. The faculty is supported by multiple grants from federal agencies such as NSF and NASA and have established collaborations with research centers and departments in the Capital Region. We are looking for candidates who will significantly contribute to the department's research, closely collaborate with existing members of the department, and enhance our undergraduate and graduate programs in the area of data science. In particular, the successful candidate is expected to have the potential for collaboration with both our Topological Data Analysis and Machine Learning groups and complement their expertise.

Candidates should possess excellent research credentials as demonstrated by their Ph.D. dissertation, publications, external funding, and as supported by three (3) letters of recommendation from experts in the field. Also of great importance are teaching credentials demonstrated by student evaluations and/or teaching awards and supported by letters of recommendation. Candidates are encouraged to submit an additional 4th letter of recommendation focused exclusively on teaching experience.

  • Research: publish original research in professional journals, present research results at professional meetings, seek external funding to support their research, and supervise the research of Ph.D. students.
  • Teaching: teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Service: advise undergraduate majors, serve on various departmental committees, and participate in certain activities of the profession (such as refereeing papers and reviewing grant proposals).


Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree in Mathematics or Applied Mathematics from a university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • Research Specialization in computational mathematics for Data Science / Machine Learning.
  • Postdoctoral experience and a successful record of external funding are highly desirable.

Professional Rank and Salary Range: Assistant Professor (10 months)
