Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:
Function: The Director of Finance for Academic Affairs reports to the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer – Academic Affairs. The role will have oversight of all financial functions within the Office of the Provost, Medical School, School of Health Professions, School of Public Health, and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The Director will be responsible for the long-term strategic financial planning process for Academic Affairs and outline the opportunities and challenges facing the schools. This position will be a key financial liaison between Business Affairs, Heath Affairs, and Academic Affairs supporting the Chief Operating Officer.

Scope: Academic Affairs

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Coordinate all budget discussions within Academic Affairs for the COO

Provides budget recommendations to respond to a wide range of issues, develops and recommends funding scenarios to address concerns, and facilitates resolution

Interact directly with Administrators on finance and performance questions, working with institutional decision support to provide timely management reports to Academic Affairs leadership

Perform analysis and make recommendations on complex financial methodologies involving medical group, grants management, gifts, endowments, state, and tuition & fees fund groups

Partner with Business Affairs to prepare and provide executive reports on monthly and year-to-date performance by the department and school level

Coordinate analytical requests relating to financial and operational trends, gifts, endowments, grant trends, space efficiency, etc.

Resolve issues raised by faculty and administrators/business managers on matters related to finance, space, benchmarks, systems, etc.

Partner with Medical Group Finance and Business Affairs to support, develop, and maintain an all funds reporting and budgeting system

Present Academic Affairs financial information at leadership venues, faculty onboarding opportunities, manager meetings, etc.

Set strategies for department coordination on issues related to finance or compliance, translating into new policies and procedures, etc.

Maintain an ongoing capital plan for Academic Affairs and help formulate financial strategies and contingencies to meet Academic Affairs obligations. Provide supervision of Academic and Research capital projects through monitoring of budget, scope, and outcomes

Understand the financial condition of the schools and translate this data to an executive view for the COO and Dean’s review

Lead financial redesign efforts within Academic Affairs regarding the methodologies used to allocate Provost funds

Serve as a key thought leader in the budget process, including the effort to create consistency in budgeting and accounting practices

Assist the Chief Operating Officer with new strategies for efficiency and/or revenue generation

Become a leader in the National Group on Business Affairs in the AAMC to evaluate how other Schools are organized and other opportunities for improvement in systems.

A demonstrated record of leadership ability and professional accomplishment.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or related field with at least 8 years or more progressive experience, ideally with some experience in an Academic Medical Center is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
A Master’s degree with 10 years or more of progressive experience, ideally with some experience in an Academic Medical Center.
