What You Will Do
This postdoctoral position is centered on the development of novel in situ characterization techniques. One major focus will be on combining advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques (e.g. 4D-STEM) and nanomechanical testing. An emphasis is placed on visualizing various defect interactions with grain boundaries. The position will also involve the development of platforms combining stress and corrosion environments for investigation using atomic force microscope and nanoindentation systems. Material systems of interest include conventional materials (e.g. pure Fe and Cu), additively manufactured materials, thin films, and ion-irradiated structural materials.
A successful candidate will collaborate with a team of experimentalists and modelers to explore and understand deformation mechanisms at the nanoscale and in coupled stress/corrosion environments. Candidates with a background in this research area, willingness to work with others, and a solid academic profile are encouraged to apply.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Expertise in nanomechanical testing and surface tribology
Significant experience with transmission electron microscopy techniques
Knowledge of material deformation mechanisms with an emphasis on metallic systems.
Experience with designing and developing novel test platforms.
Experience with the use of 4D-STEM techniques
Knowledge of electrochemistry and corrosion
Experience with the use of film deposition systems
Education: A Ph.D. in material science, mechanical engineering, or related engineering discipline completed within the last 5 years or soon to be completed.
Location: This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
