Szaflarski Lab - Department of Neurology - Division of Epilepsy
University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama
Date Posted 06/30/2021
Employment Type Fulltime
Application Deadline Open until filled

The University of Alabama at Birmingham, School of Medicine, Department of Neurology is pleased to announce an opening for one Postdoctoral Fellow in the Division of Epilepsy. Under the direction of Drs. Jerzy P. Szaflarski, M.D, Ph.D. and Lawrence W. Ver Hoef, MD, the Fellow will have the unique opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research using Stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG), a minimally invasive clinical procedure in which electrodes are surgically implanted into the brain in order to better localize the seizure focus. During the post-implantation period and without interrupting the clinical procedures, the successful candidate will utilize sEEG recordings directly from an array of depth electrodes implanted throughout the brain to capture the spatio-temporal transitions within broadly distributed functional brain networks on a finer neuroanatomical (millimeter) and temporal (millisecond) scale than possible with standard functional neuroimaging and electrophysiology techniques. Accordingly, the fellow will utilize this novel and innovative approach by utilizing expertise in data analysis techniques and tools to assess cognitive task performance during both passive recording and stimulation interventions. Thus, they will assess brain-behavior relationships across language, memory, and emotion domains of cognition as an avenue to study both healthy and dysfunctional neural networks underlying information processing. In addition, the fellow will help develop pre-surgical evaluations that assess neural nodes within language-, memory-, and emotion-relevant networks to later compare these assessments with outcomes following resective surgery.

The candidate will be expected to possess a Ph.D. degree with experience in neuroscience, computational neuroscience, imaging, electrophysiology, neuroengineering or related field. Familiarity with psychiatry, neuropsychology, and psychology theory and models is also desirable but not required.

Applicants should submit their CV to Jerzy Szaflarski, M.D, Ph.D. szaflaj@uab.edu
