What You Will Do

The P-4 Plasma Physics group in Physics Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct experimental research in intense, relativistic laser interaction with matter. P-4 is a world leader in high-energy-density (HED) plasma physics and inertial-confinement fusion (ICF), and conducts an exciting program of research in support of national-security and plasma/fusion-science programs at national facilities.

The project you will join will adhere to an aggressive, milestone-driven schedule. It is expected that the successful candidate will travel to various laser facilities within U.S. to conduct experiments. You will have the opportunity to conduct research leading to high-impact research papers, to present at top plasma-physics conferences, and to build your credentials for a successful career.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent and collaborative research in experimental relativistic laser-matter interaction or a closely related discipline, as evidenced by at least one first-author paper submitted to or published in a peer-reviewed journal.

  • Sound academic training in fundamental laser-matter interaction physics.

  • Significant hands-on research experience in a laboratory laser-matter physics environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate both technically and interpersonally both orally and in writing.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with building and/or operating plasma diagnostics.

  • Experience with maintaining/operating data-acquisition systems.

  • Experience with mechanical construction of laboratory hardware, etc.

  • Experience with data analysis using software tools such as Matlab or Python.

  • Familiarity with kinetic particle-in-cell simulations.

Education: A Ph.D. in experimental plasma physics or very closely related discipline, earned within the last five years.

Additional Details

Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
