Job Description

The AVP and Chief Development Officer provides leadership and supervision to university fundraising, donor and alumni activities. Leadership responsibility for donor relations and major gifts. Cultivates relationships and maintains contact with corporations, organizations, businesses, alumni, foundations, and individuals that are potential donors of money or valuable property for endowments, scholarships, and unrestricted funds. Coordinates solicitation of funds by University divisions. Organizes and implements major endowment drives.

Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Oversees and leads administrative infrastructure for maintaining and enhancing a culture of philanthropy which includes donor relations, annual giving and solicitation processes.

  • Builds and maintains financial support from foundation, corporate, individual, alumni, and private sources. Convey sensitivity and confidentiality to the needs of donors.

  • Supervises advancement and development staff. Provides leadership, guidance, mentoring, and professional career development. Reflect an optimistic and positive attitude in building and maintaining a collaborative team.

  • Lead the development of annual and long range strategic plans for fundraising initiatives, foundation and donor relations. Prepares and presents fundraising goals to the President and other entities.

  • Oversee the development of public relations and marketing strategies, publications and collateral materials for donor outreach and relations.

  • Lead and oversee the planning, and major fundraising and/or comprehensive campaigns. Ensures the coordination of fundraising efforts for the University across the various institutional departments, including athletics.

  • Lead and oversee the system for the identification, research, and personal solicitation for assigned major prospects, including preparing proposals for individuals, foundations, and corporate prospects. Provides tracking and follow-up.

  • Oversees donor stewardship including personal contact, appropriate donor recognition, invitations, and assisting in account updates. Assists in updating scholarship records.

  • Assists donors with establishing funds and accounts.

  • Ensures the maximization of the donor database including accurate records, conducting donor research, prospect evaluation and tracking monthly activity with major prospects.

  • Provides support and recommendations to the A&M San Antonio Foundation including the executive committee and new board member development. Organize and assist the President with the University Advisory Board.

  • Oversee the scholarship administrative services functions, oversee board meeting preparation and communications.

  • Oversee and lead the planning and preparation of special events, alumni events, and Foundation Board meetings.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.

  • Five years of related experience in fundraising or development .

  • Five years experience in senior level management.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and building teams with performance based goals.

  • Demonstrated experience building, planning and implementing institutional systems to meet strategic goals and initiatives

  • Demonstrated experience complying with operating procedures and system wide policies

  • Demonstrated experience preparing executive briefings to senior leadership, boards and interested stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fundraising techniques, tax laws pertaining to gifts/donations, and grant availability techniques.

  • Knowledge of University environment, trends, and resources of higher education.

  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of the University, both internally and externally.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Effective planning, leadership, teamwork, and organizational skills.

  • Licensing / Professional Certification – None.

Supervision of Others :

This position supervises advancement and alumni employees.
