Description
Early Career Ecologist Mentorship Program April 2021- Solicitation Program Overview: The restructured Early Career Mentorship Program focuses on helping mentees develop a mentorship network that can evolve with their needs as they transition through their ecological careers. This mentorship network will consist of a diverse group of mentors and cohorts that represent a range of career stages and pathways. The program will kick off at the annual Ecological Society of America meeting (August 1- 6, 2021). During the meeting, we will have two main events for mentees (and mentors). 1. One-on-one mentorship needs meeting. Mentees will be paired with a primary mentor who will work with the mentee to identify their mentorship and networking needs. This event will be held early in the conference to help orient the mentee to ESA meetings and point them towards useful events and resources at the meeting. Your mentor will also be encouraged to provide you feedback on your virtual talk/poster. 2. Speed Mentoring Mentees will get the chance to meet several of the programs’ mentors in a series of 10-minute small group discussions. This will allow mentees to speak with a range of established ecologists that have diverse interests, experiences, and careers. Following the ESA meeting, the program will facilitate quarterly webinars focused on career development and informed by the specific needs of our mentee cohort. This could include webinars with Q&A sections on fellowships and grant development, postdoctoral positions, academic and other diverse job applications, balancing work and family responsibilities, and more. We will also facilitate brief discussions following each webinar to provide opportunities for mentees to engage with other mentees. Our intention is to have these webinars serve as a forum for mentees to learn from the diverse mentor pool, as well as their fellow mentees. We expect that all mentees attend at least two of these webinars and mentors will be asked to participate in at least one webinar. The Early Career Mentorship Program is a non-funded program. We cannot provide mentees with travel or registration funds to attend the 2021 Ecological Society America Meeting.
