What You Will Do
This position will be filled at either theR&D Engineer 1 or 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
The Sigma Division is seeking a Research and Development Engineer with a Metallurgy or Welding Engineering background to support a diverse program suite in high energy density, semi-automatic arc welding, brazing and additive manufacturing specialties. You will be expected to creatively apply scientific and engineering principles to grow sustainable research programs, support production operations at other NNSA sites, develop process solutions to welding and joining challenges, and mature additive manufacturing technologies within the nuclear weapons complex. In this role you will directly interface with a variety of customers, including the weapons and global security programs at LANL as well as external collaborators, including universities, private industry, and other government laboratories.
R&D Engineer 1 ($85,400 - $139,600)
The successful candidate will:
Lead production-centric research and development activities in the areas of high energy density welding/ additive manufacturing, or vacuum furnace/induction brazing, or semi-automatic arc welding
Work within integrated and cross disciplinary teams to design and fabricate experimental assemblies aligned with customer needs
Provide high energy density welding/additive manufacturing/brazing/arc welding expertise and support for production agency needs
Develop novel welding and additive manufacturing techniques to ensure customer requirements are being met
Contribute to and author technical papers for publishing in peer-reviewed technical journals
Work with teams to write proposals for R&D funding both internal and external
Assist with the procurement of new equipment and support the removal of legacy equipment
Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation and equipment in the facility
R&D Engineer 2 ($94,100 - $155,700)
In addition to the duties outlined above, the R&D Engineer 2 will be required to:
Write and lead proposals for R&D funding both internal and external
Serve as a primary interface between the engineering and manufacturing functions to ensure production and research objectives are met
Mentor junior staff, postdoctoral associates, or students on research or manufacturing projects
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Demonstrated expertise and mastery of high energy density welding/additive manufacturing/brazing/arc welding or similar
Demonstrated understanding of how welding/additive manufacturing processes impact microstructural evolution, creation of weld anomalies, and development of residual stress
Experience presenting research results at technical conferences, instructing lab/lecture courses
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and a demonstrated ability to interact with colleagues and customers
Ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship

Experience leading the design, planning, and execution of applied engineering projects
Experience with developing proposals and research programs

R&D Engineer 1 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 2 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
R&D Engineer 2 Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution and 4 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Experience applying advanced engineering simulations or modeling to production environments
Experience with computer data acquisition systems or the advanced application of sensor technologies on welding or additive manufacturing equipment
Drafting or CAD software experience
Experience working with radiological materials
Formal training or hands-on experience in any of the following areas: arc welding (GTAW or GMAW), brazing, diffusion bonding, explosion bonding, friction stir welding, other welding methods, heat treatment, casting, machining, forging, and/or other metal fabrication using manual or computer numerically controlled equipment
Experience with weld evaluation including non-destructive testing and mechanical testing
Experience with inspection techniques (both destructive and non-destructive)
