What You Will Do

The Postdoctoral Associate candidate will be responsible for conducting independent research and engaging in a broad set of activities across several scientific disciplines. Projects will support research and development specifically related to chemistry, materials, and chemical engineering. The successful candidate will: apply scientific principles and methods to solve complicated technical problems; develop novel techniques or principles; analyze data (raw experimental data or within a computational domain). The position will require direct interface with colleagues, customers and sponsors, thepreparation of proposals and reports, and also includes delivery of program/progress updates. C-CDE anticipates a number of postdoctoral opportunities for chemists, material scientists, and chemical engineers in one or more of the following areas:

  • Conduct research in the field of nanoscale materials synthesis, nanocomposite and microporous membrane fabrication and characterization.

  • Design and synthesis of functional polymers.

  • Development of organic-inorganic composite materials.

  • Fabrication of various configurations of membranes with tunable microporosity.

  • In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in characterization techniques such as GPC, Rheometer, NMR, FT-IR, ATR, XRD, DSC, TGA, TG-MS, DMA, UTM, XPS, SEM, TEM, AFM, EPMA, FIB, EDX.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experimental background and publication record in polymers and polymer-based composite materials

  • Experience in polymer formulation and material property optimization

  • Experience in polymer characterization methods (e.g. rheolometer, FTIR, NMR, GC-MS, TGA, DSC, DMA)

  • Hands-on experience of 3D printing with Direct Ink Write (DIW) or Stereolithography (SLA) using polymer-based composites

  • Proven self-motivation with a desire to be a technical leader

  • A demonstrated record of technical excellence and innovative thinking as evidenced by publication and presentation records and letters of reference

  • Proven ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independently to meet programmatic milestones and scientific goals

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate both verbally and written

  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently under pressure in a rapidly changing environment

  • Demonstrated excellent organizational skills

  • Proven experience in applying fundamental scientific and/or engineering concepts to complex, multidisciplinary problems

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of polymer degradation mechanisms and time-temperature superposition approaches in predicting polymer performance

  • A broad background and interest in interdisciplinary science.

  • Ability to apply fundamental concepts and techniques developed in one discipline to a variety of (and perhaps incompletely defined) problems traditionally associated with other disciplines.

Education:

A Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field. The candidate must have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment and be within five years of completion of the Ph.D. Candidates may also have previous experience including postdoctoral experience.

Where You Will Work

Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns.

This position will be filled at a Postdoctoral Associate Level. The position resides in the Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group. The Chemical Diagnostics and Engineering Group is an applied technology organization focused on resolving national security-related issues in stockpile manufacturing and support, surveillance, applied and basic energy sciences, threat reduction, public health, the environment, and space exploration. The group's core approach involves the integrated development and application of technologies utilizing underlying scientific expertise in Analytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Microbiology, Explosives, Chemical Process Development and/or Chemical Engineering. The highly interdisciplinary nature of these activities requires scientists and engineers who can readily operate within, and transition between, the traditional academic disciplines.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 .
