Summary: 

As a member of the Tax team, the Tax Manager will be responsible for preparing and reviewing various types of tax and information returns along with research and other analysis. This role will focus heavily on reviewing the Institute’s alternative investments for tax purposes. They will function as a technical and subject matter expert. The position is located at our Headquarters in Chevy Chase, Maryland and will report to the Senior Tax Manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help support the organization's mission and aspirations and ensure tax and accounting department understands and contributes to the Institute’s overall mission.
  • Partner collaboratively with internal and external groups to ensure compliance with tax and regulatory requirements. 
  • Prepare Forms 990 & 990-T, including supporting workpapers, for the Institute. Prepare Form 990 for the Institute's VEBA.
  • Review Crowe data entry in Ctrac - UBIT & foreign filings (8865, indirect 926s).
  • Prepare and/or review informational forms such as Forms 5471, 8865, 926, 8621, & 8886.
  • Serve as primary point of contact for external tax accounting firm on the review of annual tax filings.
  • Review state filings as prepared by the Institute's Staff Accountant, including sales and use tax returns, property tax returns, state income tax returns, and unclaimed property returns.
  • Prepare forms for various government agencies, including Federal Reserve Bank of NY returns, Commerce Department, and Census Bureau.
  • Supervises tax audits and reports findings to management.  Researches and analyzes requests for refund claims and tax protests and assists in resolving tax notices and in preparing requests for rulings. 
  • Prepare the Institute's tax provision and other support for the Financial Statement audit.
  • Performs testing of systems upgrades, enhancements and special business requirements.
  • Analyzes current processes and leverages systems (Workday, Ctrac, Ariba) to automate and simplify processes, enhance efficiency, increase effectiveness and generally to ensure process improvement opportunities are fully realized.
  • Primary responsibility for providing updates to tax department portal site.
  • Prepare tax position papers and evaluate tax policy.
  • Stay up to date on tax legislation.
  • Participate in other projects or duties as required.

Scope:

  • Supervises 1 part-time employee

Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, or Finance required; Master’s degree in Accounting, Tax, Law, or Finance preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant or Enrolled Agent required.

Experience:

  • Six to ten years of experience in accounting or tax.
  • Public accounting experience a plus.
  • In-depth knowledge of tax law and US GAAP and accounting standards.
  • Experience with Tax Exempt Organizations and Forms 990 & 990-T strongly preferred.
  • Experience with alternative investments, including review of Schedule K-1s and foreign forms strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Workday a plus.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to resolve extremely complex problems requiring the application of tax, accounting, technical or management principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Ability to interpret and communicate complex information.
  • Must function as a technical and subject matter expert.
  • Ability to manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, thoroughness, and accuracy, balanced with ability to see the big picture.
  • Sees ahead clearly; can anticipate future trends and consequences clearly.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Must possess independent decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with people at all levels within and outside the Institute.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technology.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Exceptional proficiency in Microsoft Excel).

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).
