POSITION TITLE: Senior Grants Accountant


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Grants Accountant will have a strong financial accounting background and will be a vital part in ensuring both the tactical management and stewardship of externally funded grants (federal and non-federal). They will foster close cross functional relationships across the organization with groups including Research Development, Office of Tech Development, Strategic Finance, Research Services, and Compliance to ensure the overall long-term success of Scripps Research's Principal Investigators.



RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Financial Oversight

Oversee accurate and timely financial reporting for grant activities and organizational finances.

Prepare complex journal entries, reconciliations, audit schedules, and financial statements.

  • Compliance and Risk Management

Ensure adherence to GAAP, Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200), and institutional policies.

Identify and mitigate financial, administrative, and compliance risks.

  • System and Process Management

Assess, design, implement, and monitor accounting systems and processes.

Maintain and improve controls to ensure visibility, compliance, and efficiency.

  • Financial Analysis and Documentation

Conduct complex financial analyses and prepare technical memos on new accounting pronouncements.

Review and interpret historical accounting data and financial documents for accuracy and compliance.

  • Operational Support

Oversee processing of accounting documents, including invoices and purchase orders.

  • Special Projects

Lead special projects such as budget projections, management analyses, and system implementations.

Provide backup support for critical operational roles as needed.

  • Details of established essential functions for this position will be addressed/discussed during the interview process.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 3+ years of related work experience with grants and/or program management in a biomedical research institute / early-stage biotech company.
  • Understanding of federal grants, a strong plus.
  • Ability to understand complex business drivers, develop insights utilizing a data-driven approach, and communicate succinctly to a range of different audiences (principal investigators, administration colleagues, and lab coordinators).
  • Adept in ambiguous situations, flexible and comfortable making decisions using available data points that can be limited and/or imperfect.
  • Adaptable to changing priorities while effectively managing multiple commitments.
  • Strategic mindset coupled with the desire to constantly improve the status quo.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with proven experience in cultivating cross-collaborative working relationships across an organization.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field.
  • This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.

COMPENSATON:

The expected hiring range for this position is $80,000 to $115,000/annually, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
