Position Summary

The English Division at Green River College is seeking applications for an adjunct faculty member to teach college composition, research writing, and Muslim American Literature over fall, winter, and spring quarters, respectively, for 2024-25 (one course per quarter, subject to availability), with the opportunity to teach three additional Muslim American Studies courses in related departments, depending on qualifications and availability.

The adjunct faculty member will also receive a stipend ($5000 for any of the three quarters the fellow is employed) for activities beyond the classroom, including the following: 1) course and curriculum development; 2) supporting existing equity efforts on campus; 3) delivering a presentation or workshop; 4) student engagement; 5) community engagement; and 6) participation in the statewide DEI Faculty Fellows program.

Salary dependent on qualifications and number of courses taught

***The new statewide DEI Faculty Fellows Program is an innovative program designed to offer opportunities to diverse faculty to teach and to expand curriculum in the WA community and technical college system in order to better serve the educational needs of students and WA’s communities of color and Tribal communities. The cohort of faculty fellows from participating colleges across the state will be connected to one another through a statewide learning community, which will offer mentorship and support towards fellows’ teaching, professional development, student and community engagement, and related projects.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE
Green River College's student body is made up of approximately 41% Academic Transfer students, 34% Professional-Technical, 15% Adult Basic Education, 3% Applied Bachelor degrees. Green River College has four campuses, including the main campus in Auburn, with satellite campuses in Kent, downtown Auburn, and Enumclaw. Green River programs serve high school graduates, Running Start students (dual enrollment in local high schools and the college), those seeking retraining for the workforce, international students, students learning English, and Continuing Education students. Green River's service areas are increasingly ethnically diverse, comprising African Americans, African immigrants, Asian Americans, Asians, Latinx, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Middle Eastern Americans, among other communities.

The English Division offers courses in developmental composition and reading, transfer-level composition, literature, technical and professional writing, cultural studies, humanities, creative writing, film, and study skills. The mission of the English Division is to support our students in developing skills and critical approaches that will enable them to engage and transform the world around them. The Division is committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, staff, and administration. We integrate diverse literary and cultural texts in our curriculum, affirm students’ multiple literacies, and foster pedagogical innovation. The English Division promotes a culture of mutual respect and collegiality among 18 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 35 adjunct faculty, who bring a wide range of backgrounds and expertise. The Division’s impact and leadership extend to the campus and community, including through the operation of the Writing & Reading Center.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum
  • Master’s degree in English literature, Rhetoric and Composition, MFA in Creative Writing, or equivalent degree.
  • Complementary degree, certificate, substantial coursework, or history of publication in Muslim American Studies, Ethnic Studies, Multicultural Studies, or related interdisciplinary or social science fields.
  • Experience teaching English and/or Muslim American Studies at the college level.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to equity in working with students and colleagues from under-represented, marginalized, and under-served communities and identities.
  • Experience with online teaching using Canvas or equivalent CMS platforms.

Preferred
  • Knowledge of diversity within Islamic history and societies, including jurisprudence and intersectional identities.
  • Lived experience working in and with Muslim communities.

Health Benefits:
Adjunct faculty may become eligible for benefits if they work two (2) consecutive quarters at 50% or more of full time academic load in order to qualify for benefits (based on instructional hours only).

Newly-hired adjunct faculty are eligible for PEBB insurance benefits when they have taught 50 percent or more of a full-time workload* for two consecutive quarters at one or more public higher education institutions, going on benefits the start of the second quarter at 50% or more. Medical, dental, life and long term disability insurance benefits are provided as currently administered under the Public Employees Benefits Board.

Adjunct faculty who initially meet the State Board Retirement Plan Eligibility criteria after June 30, 2011 are given the option to participate in the State Board Plan (TIAA-CREF) or to participate in TRS 3, and have 30 days to make a choice. The eligibility threshold for participation in the State Board Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF) is 50 percent of a full-time workload* at one or more college districts or the State Board for two consecutive quarters. There may be other options available under limited circumstances.

Leave accruals and usage are governed by the faculty master contract.

  • Half time is defined as one-half of the full-time academic workload as determined by each institution, except that half time for community and technical colleges faculty employees is governed by RCW 28B.50.489.
