Position Summary:

The evolutionary genomics lab of John Pool is recruiting a full time or part time research specialist. The Pool Lab uses genomic data and Drosophila fly experiments to gain insights into fundamental evolutionary processes. Research areas include the genetic architecture of adaptive trait evolution, the early stages of reproductive isolation, and the relationship between genetic diversity and evolvability. The lab currently includes the professor, one postdoctoral researcher, four PhD students, and four undergraduates.
The research specialist will be involved in generating genomic/transcriptomic sequence data, performing fly experiments, and maintaining lab operations. Molecular work will include DNA isolation, genomic library preparation for Illumina sequencing, RNA isolation, and RNA-seq library preparation. Drosophila experiments will include assaying the viability and reproduction of flies under varying environmental conditions. The research specialist will also help the Pool Lab maintain a clean and safe laboratory environment, order supplies, maintain laboratory records, and coordinate the maintenance of fly stocks.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Bachelors degree in a biological field or related field.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

One or more years of experience in a student or post-graduate laboratory position is required.
The candidate should be able to:
* Keep track of a large number of tasks, and prioritize them to manage time effectively.
* Maintain and enhance systems of organization in laboratory and online environments.
* Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
* Work collaboratively and maintain positive professional relationships.
Desirable expertise (but not required):
* Experience with the preparation of DNA or RNA libraries for Illumina sequencing.
* Experience working with Drosophila flies.
* Experience maintaining laboratory operations.
* Computational biology skills including Unix command line usage and computer programming experience.

Candidates with greater than the minimum experience and qualifications are welcome to apply. The exact salary and level of the position will depend on the applicant hired.
Title prefix is dependent on relevant work experience.
This is a fixed-term terminal appointment with a guaranteed length of twelve months (expected term of employment is April 1, 2021 through March 31, 2022). This appointment may be extended up to a maximum of 24 months as a fixed-term terminal appointment or may become a renewable appointment depending on funding.
