Position Overview

This is an advanced research training post-doctoral fellowship funded by a grant from the US Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Community Living, entitled “Advanced Rehabilitation Research Training in Pediatric Mobility for Physicians, Therapists and Engineers.” The training program is for 12 months.

Duties and Responsibilities

The postdoctoral trainee will participate in all three elements of the training program, including:
1. Completing the didactic requirements including courses, workshops, and seminars in in five in-depth areas, which include Evidence Based Research, Biostatistics, Outcomes Assessment, Scientific Writing and Grantsmanship, and Pediatric Mobility, as well as practical research skills such as manuscript and grant writing, and IRB review mechanisms;
2. Completing a directed independent research project in one of four research areas: Musculoskeletal Biomechanics and Biomaterials, Foot and Ankle Mobility, or Functional Assessment/Outcomes Measurement;
3. Participating in Collegial & Collaborative Activities such as joining a national organization, submitting an abstract or short paper for a national scientific meeting, attending a national scientific meeting, completing an away rotation at one of several research support laboratories and an international clinical rotation, and giving presentations at ARRT meetings;
As part of the three elements of the training program, the postdoctoral trainee will also
1. Submit multiple journal articles;
2. Collaborate on extramural proposals;
3. Prepare information products; and
4. Give lectures.
Within the Training Grant, each of the three training elements has measurable performance objectives established for the trainee.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Earned doctorate (or its foreign equivalent) or appropriate terminal degree.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Successful completion of a doctoral program in engineering, physical therapy, or occupational therapy with a solid ability to do rehabilitation research;
• Evidence of a strong interest in research including a minimal level of productivity such as published abstracts, submitted manuscript(s) to a peer-reviewed journal and national level presentation(s);
• Rehabilitation research interest that is closely matched to research area;
• Background in biomedical engineering, biomechanics, rehabilitation engineering, and human movement sciences;
• Experience in biomechanics, human movement, biomedical imaging, and musculoskeletal modeling is desired;
• Qualities appropriate for a faculty appointment following conclusion of the training period.
Preference will be given to candidates who have a disability or are from a traditionally under-represented group.
