Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of English at the University of Maryland seeks a Director of Operations with personal and organizational energy and sophisticated understanding of operational requirements for a large and complex department to fulfill its commitments and aspirations. This position reports directly to the Chair and directs the administrative, staff, technical, and facilities functions of the department.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor’s degree.

Experience:
  • Record of success in overseeing a complex organization. 
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant experience required. 
  • Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience required, preferably within an institution of higher education.
  • Demonstrated experience with organizational development and strategic planning, including the management of people and resources.
  • Experience working on multi-faceted and detail driven projects, as well as completing those projects within the given deadlines and budget.
  • Experience working cooperatively and effectively with senior management, staff, faculty or constituent groups across all levels of the organization and maintaining productive professional relationships in complex, demanding environments.
  • Experience prioritizing goals and formulating independent decisions regarding policies, procedures and operations.
  • Experience with a range of IT, data-systems, and enterprise management systems.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Exceptional customer service and superb oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with diverse populations, including faculty, staff, students, college and university administrators.
  • Experience handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion and tact. A commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging and promoting an inclusive and equitable workplace.
  • Proven ability to respond positively to extreme pressures of time and workload and ability to handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, meet deadlines, and track flow of large volumes of work.
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a high traffic office. Excellent organizational and analytical skills with diligent attention to detail.
  • Highly collaborative style with the energy, maturity, and leadership to serve as a unifying force and position stewardship discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels.
