Job Summary

Performs simultaneous interpreting and transliterating for Deaf and hard of hearing students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Primarily interpret in classroom settings. Sets a high professional standard for other interpreters to follow.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties

Interprets/transliterates in American Sign Language or other communication modes as required for individuals who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Interprets a regular schedule of classes and covers additional assignments that arise, including campus activities. Must be able to work well with others and work as a team interpreter. Schedules may require split shifts and travel between campuses.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.

Preferred Qualifications

National Interpreter Certification, RID CI/CT, NAD 4/5, and/or Utah Professional certification.

Completion of an Interpreter Training Program

Minimum Qualifications

State of Utah Novice certification or national certification required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of and ability to apply the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct and standard practices for interpreting/transliterating in post secondary education. Skill in professional communication with faculty, staff, and students. Knowledge in math, English, and a wide range of college general education subjects. Knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture and Deaf history.

Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, ethnic background, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.
