About the Department

The 900+ positions of the Facilities Division service the students and staff of the University’s teaching, research/administrative space and 2, 240 acres of infrastructure. The Facilities Division provides design and building services, maintenance, custodial, landscape, solid waste removal, utility, mail, and motor pool services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The goal is to deliver cost-effective services to the University, and ensure completed projects and maintenance that conform to codes and regulations while minimizing University liabilities and disruptions caused by the maintenance, repair, building, and equipment modifications to the University.

Essential Job Duties

Multi-Trade Renovation Technician is needed to tackle the growing workload and the need for specialized expertise in the HVAC field. A Mechanical Crew Leader serves as a technical expert with knowledge of all HVAC mechanical trades in the renovation field. Primary duties of the Multi-Trade Renovation Technician include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Providing needed information and making interpretations of the NC Mechanical code to assure compliance.
  • Interfacing with State Construction Office inspection and code compliance staff to ensure successful inspection and acceptance of in-house built projects.
  • Assisting the Construction Shop HVAC Lead in overseeing all HVAC mechanical work with the task of reducing the growing load of HVAC projects.
  • Creating a material list for project supplies and equipment to complete scheduled work order projects in a timely manner.
  • Serving as a North Carolina State license heating 2 & 3 technical expert required by the NC State construction office
  • Inspecting work done by others and making sure that all work is complete under the NC State mechanical code to be inspected by the NC State Construction office.
  • Computer skills are required for renovation procurement and producing management reports.

Other Responsibilities

  • This position will be required to walk with the State Construction Office inspectors and gather all mechanical installation issues or changes to get this project to pass all State mechanical codes inspection and approvals.
  • Follow all directions from the Mechanical Lead person.
  • Knowledgeable of remodeling trades, practices, procedures, techniques, tools and equipment. Understands materials, specifications, quality control, cost control, and safety.
  • Reads and understands blueprints.
  • Knows and functions in at least one other trade and possesses general knowledge of others.
  • Assists other trades as required.

Minimum Experience/Education

High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).
 
Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Must be able to communicate effectively verbally with supervisors and the general public and understand verbal and written instructions and other communications regarding work assignments and other matters.
  • The primary functions of the position require the ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally, with or without a reasonable accommodation.
  • Experience in HVAC trade.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a university setting with a State HVAC License to renovate building HVAC space and with multi trade experience.

Required License or Certification

  • Required to have the NC State Heating/AC license in categories 2 & 3
  • A valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of employment.
  • Licenses/certifications must be maintained as a condition of employment.
