The mission of the NC State Department of Athletics is to prepare student-athletes to compete at the highest level and to inspire them to be leaders now and for the future by providing the best environment to achieve their athletic, academic and personal aspirations as well as providing support for the professional development of our coaches and staff, all within the role of the greater institutional relationships to the University. 

This position will serve in the Athletic Communications Dept. for North Carolina State University Athletic Department which competes as a NCAA Division I team in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Athletics Communications Department designs, writes and produces all media guides, news releases and other printed materials. They report statistics and information to ACC and NCAA offices. Coordinate and respond to all media inquiries.

Essential Job Duties

The Director of Communications is responsible for creating media awareness, working to extend the brand and message of NC State University Athletics and producing digital publications and publicity. The position will serve as the primary communications contact for the Wolfpack’s top-five women’s basketball program as well as one other Olympic sport.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Serve as the primary media relations and communications contact for women’s basketball.
  • Serve as the primary contact for one other Olympic sport program.
  • Work with women’s basketball creative staff to ideate, develop and implement content plan to promote the program to prospective student-athletes and fans.
  • Serve as content creator for assigned Olympic sport by editing graphic templates, and recording and posting social media videos.
  • Develop strategies to develop and extend the brand of NC State.
  • Assist Associate AD for Communications in day to day operations and leadership of communications staff.
  • Serve as primary NC State Athletics liaison between assigned sports programs and national, regional, and local media, as well as the public.
  • Develop communications strategies to reach national and regional media and supporters to generate revenue.
  • Develop and provide media training/instruction to student-athletes, coaches, and administration.
  • Foster and maintain positive relations with media representatives from the electronic and print media.
  • Research, write, and release digital sports publications and other materials as directed to the appropriate media, conference and national offices, websites, etc.
  • Create solutions and ideas to promote, brand, and market programs.
  • Produce creative, timely, and relevant content to support editorial goals of GoPack.com
  • Oversee management of press operations for home competitions including hiring, supervision, and instruction for all applicable game staffing, logistics, and technical requirements.
  • Develop design concept, write, and produce online media guides, news releases, and other printed material when necessary.
  • Coordinate media operations at all home events for assigned sports.
  • Travel with selected teams to away contests.
  • Compile statistics and maintain records.
  • Report statistics and information to ACC and NCAA offices.
  • Assist with content/maintenance for the GoPack.com athletics website, as well as photography archives.
  • Maintain knowledge of the rules and policies of the NCAA, ACC and University as it relates to this position to insure compliance.
  • Report all known NCAA violations in accordance with institutional, conference and NCAA policies and guidelines.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or related field and two years experience in sports information/communications.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years experience in sports information/communications required.
  • Must be familiar with applicable desktop publishing programs.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in social media is helpful, as is experience in branding/marketing.
  • Experience working with women’s basketball.
