Role:

An Adult Basic Education (ABE) teacher plans for and provides instruction in basic reading, language arts, math, and English Language Acquisition (ELA) skills to adult and adolescent students, based on GCCCA ABE course outlines and core instructional materials. The program is designed for adult and adolescent students who wish to improve their skills to study at the high school level, enter a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or vocational program, or to create a better life for themselves and their families.

Position involves teaching students with a range from low to high levels of English proficiency and from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Excellent organizational skills as well as a desire to work collaboratively in a team are required.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Instructional design, class preparation, and instruction.
  • Professional Development.
  • Tutoring.
  • Accommodations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 


Performance Measurements:

  • Administer Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and other required assessments.
  • Assess students to determine instructional level and readiness for advancement.
  • Use GCCCA course outlines and instructional plans to prepare and deliver instruction.
  • Design standards-based instructional units and lesson plans using the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS).
  • Use a variety of instructional strategies.
  • Manage and direct effective classroom instruction.
  • Adapt instruction to various learning styles and abilities.
  • Group students to organize instruction.
  • Monitor student progress.
  • MSG’s completion, ILP monitoring, EILCE curriculum participation and monitoring. Digital Literacy curriculum participation and monitoring. Civics Integration- Class community event participation/community involvement. Collect, record, and report all necessary information related to students in a timely manner.
  • Attend off-campus student recruiting events, as needed.
  • Participate in professional growth activities such as GCCCA-sponsored conferences and workshops, including all GCCCA staff meetings (some travel required).
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary in attaining established program goals.

Knowledge and Skills:
Experience: Two years to five years of similar or related experience.
Education: A Bachelor's degree in education or related field of study required.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication skills are required as is an understanding and appreciation of diversity.
Other Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite preferred. The ability to maintain confidential information is necessary as are strong organizational skills. Some evening and/or weekend hours may be requested/required.
Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking, standing, bending, carrying of items, generally not over 25 pounds, driving an automobile, etc. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
Work Environment: Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
