The Raclin Murphy Museum of Art strives to create positions for students to work closely with a specific Museum department while allowing moments for broad learning of museum practice.
Under the supervision of the Curator of European and American Art before 1900, the Research Assistant will learn the basics of cataloging, documenting, describing, recording, and limited art handling of art objects. Projects can be tailored to the student’s interests. The current project includes research of British, French, and Italian paintings of the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The student’s work will be added to the Museum’s collection management database (Embark) and used to produce curatorial reports for future acquisitions meetings.

Responsibilities:
- Write concise descriptions of objects, determining subjects and iconography
- Identify comparanda and sources
- Compile bibliographies and provide literature reviews for assigned objects
- Conduct archival research to establish provenance, exhibition histories, and critical reception for select works in the collection.
Skills and knowledge that will be gained:
- Deeper understanding of art historical narratives and typologies
- Broaden research, writing, analytical, and connoisseurship skills
- Introduction to curatorial practice, including interpretive strategies, conservation issues, technical analyses, framing and presentation
- Familiarity with collection database management systems
Minimum Qualifications
- Strong writing skills
- Ability to work independently
- Familiarity with European and American art history survey, including art of the Spanish Americas
- Reading knowledge of a European language
- Facility with Word, Excel, PPT; computer literacy and keyboard skills
