About the Department

Founded in 2003, the UNC/NC State Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering is a unique collaboration between North Carolina’s two flagship universities: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) and North Carolina State University (NC State). The Joint Department is a unique partnership that unites two universities with shared graduate and undergraduate programs in a single administrative department with a single chairperson. The nationally ranked UNC Hospitals and School of Medicine at UNC-CH provide an excellent clinical environment for interactions and translation, and the College of Arts and Sciences forms the academic core of the Carolina experience. The College of Engineering at NC State, ranked one of the finest engineering and computer science schools in the world, offers state-of-the-art facilities for students and faculty engaged in vital areas of research and technology transfer.

The Joint Department is on track to realize its ambitious vision of becoming a leader in real-world results and its mission to unite engineering and medicine to improve lives. The Joint Department has grown to encompass 54 primary teaching and research faculty members (including five endowed chairs) and over 600 undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students. With more than $25 million in research expenditures, BME students benefit from the robust research portfolios,  exceptional education, and vast resources of these world-class public universities. Among biomedical engineering departments, the Joint Department is ranked in the top 15 globally and top 10 domestically (Shanghai Rankings) and in the top 5 by total BME BS Graduates (ASEE). Established in 2010 by Dr. Ross W. Lampe Jr., the endowed Lampe Distinguished Professorship in BME will support the recruitment and one of the Joint Department’s next leaders in biomedical engineering.
