Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) offers career-training programs in numerous technical, industrial and medical fields at a reasonable cost, going so far as to even waive tuition for certain eligible students. Located in Richlands, Virginia, Southwest offers associate’s degrees in such fields as business, education, general studies, liberal arts and science. These degrees are primarily intended for students who wish to transfer to a four-year university. Southwest also has associate’s degrees that feature programs intended to lead directly to a career in fields such as Nursing, Radiography and Administration of Justice.

Southwest Virginia Community College seeks a Biology Faculty member to begin August 16, 2024. The successful candidate will provide college-level instruction in Biology. Classes may include General Biology, Medical Terminology, Human Anatomy & Physiology, and Microbiology.

This position reports directly to the Dean of Arts and Sciences and indirectly to the Vice President of Academic and Student Services.

The primary responsibility of a member of the teaching faculty in the Virginia Community College System shall be to provide quality instruction for the students. At Southwest, the major emphasis shall be on excellent teaching by working with students in classrooms and/or laboratories, through individual conferences, various distance education media, and related activities. Our goal is to help students develop their own interests and abilities to the fullest capacity in order to become better persons, better workers, and better citizens. Applicants should possess expertise in their field desire to work in a collaborative, learning-centered environment focused on equity, student learning, and success.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Biology from a regionally accredited institution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are required.
  • An acceptable background check for the successful candidate is also required.

The successful candidate will have:
  • Knowledge of current teaching and learning strategies to facilitate student-centered learning
  • Experience interacting successfully with academically diverse student populations
  • Ability to teach classes using various instructional delivery methods including web-based instruction
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and ideas in writing so others will understand
  • Ability to work with service area education providers and employers
  • Flexibility to teach evening and/or off-campus courses
  • Ongoing professional development and membership in an appropriate regional, state, and/or national organization related to teaching assignment
  • Responsibility for establishing a campus presence by holding regular office hours, advising students, participating in campus life, and participating in assigned committee work
  • An equity mindset in reviewing, evaluating and revising on a continuing basis course objectives, instructional materials, and course syllabi
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in community college teaching;
  • 18 graduate hours in Chemistry, Physics, Math or Geology
