Essential Functions of Position

The ideal candidate will share Madera Community College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. For the 2022-2023 academic year, we enrolled over 9,400 students in which 68% identify as Latinx, 8% as Asian/Pacific Islander, 3% as Black/African American, 17% as White, 1% as American Indian/Alaska Native, and 3% as multiracial. Madera Community College is a Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join a college dedicated to the students it serves.

Coaching Women’s Soccer and providing instruction in Health, Physical Education and Kinesiology on the Madera Community College campus and/or at off-site community campus locations, the instructor will be responsible for:

  • Developing and teaching courses in physical education, kinesiology and health science;
  • Developing and teaching courses in Soccer Conditioning and Soccer Training for the women’s soccer program;
  • Developing and implementing a strong student/athlete recruitment program for soccer, including the recruiting assignments of all assistant coaches;
  • Assisting in building strong relations between the community and the athletic department, particularly with the high schools of the District;
  • Assisting student athletes completing their academic requirements at the community college to transfer to four-year institutions;
  • Fundraising;
  • Providing direction for all facets of a successful college women’s soccer program, including the selection and direct oversight of assistant coaches;
  • Ensuring program compliance with the CCCAA regulations;
  • Communicating effectively with students and staff;
  • Participating in evaluation of adjunct instructors per the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement;
  • Serving on and attending department, college, and district committees as needed;
  • Participating in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning;
  • Participating in the extracurricular activities for the program and/or college;
  • Teaching assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and/or weekends, on-line or off-campus and large group instruction classes as needed; and
  • Otherwise fulfilling all of the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications

All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; and

  • Master’s in physical education, exercise science, kinesiology and two years of directly related experience; or

  • Bachelor’s degree in any of the above and Master’s in any life science and two years of directly related experience; or

  • A valid California Community College Credential; or

  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds including students with disabilities;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Related work and professional experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Demonstrated ability to work with computers, and other technologies, which are utilized in providing high-quality instruction and support to students;
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid and trainer certifications;
  • Experience teaching at the post-secondary level;
  • Experience serving on committees;
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with athletic support staff (trainer, equipment manager, etc.) to meet team’s needs;
  • Experience in game scheduling, assisting with team eligibility processes, budget management, team travel, recruitment and supervision of assistant coaching staff, fundraising, mentoring student-athletes and supporting their academic progress, retention, and matriculation;
  • Involvement in community organizations activities; and
  • Knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment

178 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits

Starting annual salary is $70,302 – $105,838 based on education and experience. An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. Coaches are eligible to receive a stipend of 10% of annual salary for fulfilling coaching duties pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure

Applications will be screened by Human Resources for completeness and to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents by the closing date and time listed on the job announcement, a selection advisory committee will review the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications then determine who will be invited to interview.

The selection advisory committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration, and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.

About the College Center
Madera Community College at Oakhurst is a satellite campus of Madera Community College. It is located just 20 minutes from the South entrance to Yosemite National Park and just minutes away from the Sierra National Forest. The campus provides opportunity and access to higher education for a geographically isolated population in Eastern Madera County. The campus currently serves Oakhurst, Mariposa County, Coarsegold, North Fork and the surrounding communities with over 75 courses in a variety of study areas. The center is slated to open a new permanent campus in Fall 2021.
