DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 500+ full-time salaried faculty members and 150+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 800+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are over 250 clinical faculties practicing at multiple sites and hospitals. Professional fee billings for the department exceed $50 million with collections of over $19 million per year. The total annual budget is approximately $170 million, which includes contract and grant revenues, clinical practice and medical center funds, and other state and private endowment funds.

Under supervision and with training, the incumbent will assist with mouse colony management, breeding, genotyping, and conducting mouse experiments. Mouse experiments will include injections, intravital imaging/microscopy, and collection of mouse tissues for analysis. Mouse tissue analysis will include processing for histology (sectioning and staining) and analysis of cells (staining, flow cytometry/sorting, single cell analysis, in vitro culture); protein (western blotting and immunoprecipitation), and nucleic acids (RNA extraction / quantitative PCR, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq and library prep for next generation sequencing). Will be responsible for assisting in lab organization, ordering materials and equipment for experiments, training new lab members, preparation of data reports and communication of results to supervisor and laboratory members. Must be willing to work in a team environment and resolve conflicts amicably. The incumbent's research will advance the overall mission of the laboratory studying sterile injury, inflammation, healing, and regeneration.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Theoretical knowledge of Biology, Immunology, Anatomy, Physiology and Disease including Genetics and Cell Biology as typically attained by a Bachelor's degree and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Biology or Bioengineering or a related field preferred.

  • Interest in learning mouse tissue harvest, tissue processing for histology, flow cytometry, protein, and nucleic acid analysis.

  • Experience staining cells and performing flow cytometry and FACS sorting.

  • Experience in DNA/RNA extraction, purification, quantification, and PCR/qPCR, and library prep for next generation sequencing.

  • Strong experience working with others and resolving conflicts amicably in a research environment.

  • Experience ordering for a lab and communicating with supplier representatives.

  • Experience performing mammalian cell culture, including cell lines and primary cells.

  • Experience in PCR, cloning, restriction digests, ligation, transformations, and DNA/plasmid preps.

  • Interest in learning to capture high quality images of cells and stained tissues using an upright fluorescence microscope (ability to learn to use the confocal microscope in the microscopy core).

  • Experience designing, executing, and analyzing research data in an organized manner and presenting findings to research faculty.

  • Ability to follow established safety and hazardous material guidelines and to keep an organized and clean laboratory bench.

  • Interest in learning to use programs such as ImageJ, matlab, photoshop, Illustrator, FlowJo, Prism, Powerpoint/Keynote to quantify results and present images and data.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Interest in assisting with some advance molecular biology experiments, such as immunoprecipitation, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq.

  • Experience in morphological and histological analysis on mouse embryonic heart.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Must be willing to work with mice.

  • Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends as required to keep steady workflow and meet deadlines.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
