Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) is a public, open access institution of higher education in the Virginia Community College System whose main campus is located in Charlottesville, Virginia. This is home of the Charlottesville Historic Downtown mall, The Jefferson School African American Heritage Center, and the John Paul Jones Arena (JPJ). Piedmont Virginia Community College is accepting applications for a nine-month anatomy and physiology/biology position starting the fall 2024 semester. Employment will begin on August 16, 2024.
This position is a nine-month faculty appointment with a teaching load of 13.5-15 credits per semester, which may include day and evening sections and in-person and hybrid sections. While this position is primarily assigned to the main campus in Charlottesville, faculty may be required to teach at any PVCC campus, including Greene County Guiseppe Center and the correctional facilities at Fluvanna, Buckingham, and Dillwyn. Candidates must have the required academic background in anatomy and physiology. Teaching experience is desired, preferably at the community college level. The primary focus is anatomy and physiology. The secondary focus is general biology. Ideally, the candidate would also be qualified to teach other biology classes if needed.
In addition to teaching, all faculty members advise students, serve on division and college-wide committees, and participate in other activities that support the college’s mission. Such activities may include but are not limited to institutional effectiveness activities, club sponsorship, student recruitment, course and program development and evaluation, community service, and mentoring new and part-time faculty. Faculty members are expected to maintain currency in their teaching disciplines and trends in community college education.

Special Requirements:
In addition to the job functions noted above, essential job functions of full-time faculty include holding 8-10 office hours weekly, preparing and distributing a syllabus to all students consistent with the course of study for each course taught, preparing grade reports for each course taught, recommending appropriate texts and support materials for each course taught, assisting in the requisition of adequate instructional equipment and supplies, regularly reviewing library collection within faculty discipline, and evaluating course instruction in accordance with established policy.
Full-time faculty are expected to participate in faculty and curriculum meetings, attend faculty workshops, assist with registration, prepare textbook orders, assist in maintaining an up-to-date inventory of equipment assigned for use in instruction, work with colleagues to promote retention of students, incorporate current and emerging instructional technologies into classroom instruction, work with colleagues to secure external financial and/or physical resources (e.g., grant writing, equipment), adhere to policies, procedures, and regulations of the college and the Virginia Community College system, and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree in anatomy and physiology or a related field with 18 graduate credits in anatomy and physiology or a master’s degree with a minimum of 18 credits in anatomy and physiology or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrate ability to work/teach in a lab setting.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with lab safety rules.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, analytical, and oral/written communication skills.
  • Commitment to the community college mission and philosophy, students, and teaching in a community college.
  • Commitment to academic advisement and mentoring of students.
  • Ability to teach during day and evening hours and travel to locations within Central Virginia.
  • Ability to use current and emerging instructional technologies and distance learning technologies.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctorate in biology or related field.
  • Experience teaching with newly emerging learning technologies
  • Teaching experience in the community college setting.
